Band. of Devoted Women Show True Mis- sionary Spirit in North Victoria, B.C. ~-- Only a great love of teaching and & true mis- sionary spirit could tempt the average man or woman $0 far from the beaten paths of civiliza- tion as the Sisters of St. Ann and the Jesuits who conduct the school for half-breeds and Eski- mos at Holy Cross, Alaska, but to Sister Mary Eulalie, who left here recently for that far northern post life in the Arctic is full of contentment, It is eleven years since Sister Mary first left the Mother House at Lachine for the north to share with other sisters of the order the responsibilities of a life which to them has its rich reward in the knowledge of necessary work well done, Translated into terms of time, Holy Cross is as far from Victoria as Palestine, for it took Sister Mary twenty-one days to 'make the journey from the mission post to this city when she came out a few weeks ago. 'It will be more than twenty days to reach home again," she said. "For the win- ter will soon be upon us, and there will he snow on the trails." Founded about fifty years ago by the Jesuits, the school at first had only a handful of pupils. To- day however, there are more than 160 pupils and a staff of eleven nuns and five brothers of the Je- suit order are required, "We teach the children every- thing that is useful," said Sister Mary. "We do not stop with teaching them the three R's, We teach the manual arts and the boys learn carpentry and other useful vocations while the girls learn cookery. The domestic gei- ence course in the Jar North is just ag important as in the south, if not more so, What possible se is there in the Arctic for a wife who cannot cook?" Bountiful crops are yielded in the gardens at the school, accord- ing to Sister Mary, who points out that while the winters are long and cold, after the spring thaw the country enjoys a suffi- | «lant pericd of warm weather to orce vegetables to ripeness at an | amazingly rapid rate, It is about 1700 miles from "| Holy Cross down to the mouth of | the Yukon. It took six days by ont to make the trip, as far as ".inana, and another {wo days m there to Seward by train. At award there is another transfer 0 boat to Juneau, where steam- 's bound for the south take on | Passengers, | The radio and the airplane have helped to banish the feeling of iso- lation up there," said Sister Mary. "The radio is often used to bring in planes on emergency medical cases. Sometimes, now that we are used to these wonders, we find it hard to imagine how we managed to get along without them," Diamonds Bassett's On Oshawa's Main Corner TIME TABLE, WHITBY.
