Brunt Expresses! Views at Convention of Teachers in Quebec Montreal, Que.-- Formal gram- mar should not be introduced before the sixth year of school, it was agreed at a recent conven- tion here of the Provincial Asso- ciation of Protestant Teachers of Quebec, A committee studying the teaching of English recom- mended many drastic changes de- signed to aid children in master- ing their mother tongue and to make the task a much happier process than heretofore has been the case. Although Pr. H. D. Brunt, chairman of the commit- tee, believed children in the first seven years of school should not be bothered with text books on composition, grammar and spell- ing, the committee as a whole did not agree with such a wnole- sale abolition. "Spelling is a mere tool, a purely skill subject, almost par- ren of thought-arousing mater- fal and of aesthetic interest," sald Miss J. B. Boyce, who urged that spelling should be dropped from the first two grades, ex- cepting what the pupil learned incidentally. "One great draw- back is the frequent failure of teachers and administrators to d!stinguish between the child's reading and writing vocabularies. We a read hundreds of words daily that we rarely or never use in writing. It is this lack of dis- crimination that resuts in spell- ing lists at the end of reading lessons, spoiling the literary ap- peal of the selection. We all read and use In speech many words that would puzzle us to spell if suddenly challenged. We neea to peli when we write and at no ot'ier time. "Each child should learn the words he finds dificult, working out his own list. AS soon as a child has acquired the mechant- cal art of reading, he should he taught to use the dictionary for spelling as well as for mean- ings." Grammar teaching, the ecom- mittee decided, should develop the sense of right and wrong n conduct of language. What chil- dren needed was "language," not rrammar---language enriched by grammar, not grammar exempli- fied hy language. "The disrepute into which #chool grammar has fallen has heer doubtless caused by the ex- aliation of nomenclature and ¢ofinition over construction and t.pplication," it was said, "For oxample, pupils have learned ehout relative pronouns in the obtract but have not learned how to use relative pronouns in prac- tice." The committee felt that chil- dren should be taught to use hooks as tools. The present meth- od of emphasizing the Iimport- ance of oral over silent reading was criticized. Silent reading in- volved a distinct skill, necessary for speed. "Much of the outery sgainst homework, overcrowd- ing of curriculum, pressure of work, and cramming is due to the fact that our punils do not read fast enough," the commits tee said Oral reading had an entirely different purpose. "Good oral reading Is an artistic achieve- ment, like good singing or draw- ing, and should be so taught," jt was daid. Ir, the teaching of literature the chief alm should be apprecia- tion and extensive rather than an. intensive course should be of- fered, stated the committee, TIME TABLE WHITBY, OSHAWA, BO BOWMANVILLE 6.45 p.m, 10.30 p.m. 11.30 p. 00 a. 115 4.
