Chicoree the Goldfinch, whom many people call the Wild Can- ary, although he isn't a Canary at all, is very fond of sunflower speeds. Having a roaming dis- position he knows where all the stinflowers grow for a long dis- tance around. He knew all about that long row at the end of Far- mer Brown's cornfield. It fact, he liked to think that those sun- flowers had been planted special- ly for him. Now Danny and Nanny Mea- dow Mouse had been feasting on those seeds chiefly after dark, though once in a while they climbed up for some in broad daylight. . They had never hap- pened to be there when Chicoree had visited the sunflowers, so hie had not seen them nor had they seen him, But Chicoree knew that someone was taking seeds, for he found the empty cels where seeds had been, and he discovered on the backs of some of the big flower heads lit- tle piles of seed husks. "Someone has been stealing my seeds!" exclaimed Chicoree the first time he found those empty cells and one of those little piles of husks, and worked himself in- to a great rage. Thereafter he visited the sunflowers several times a day hoping to discover who was taking those seeds. But he saw no one and couldn't guess who it might be. Now Danny and Nanny Meadow Mouse had come to regard those sunflowers as their own special property. They hadn't missed the seeds Chicoree had taken because fe had picked them out here and there and mostly from the flow- er heads at the the far end of the row which Danny ana Nanny hadn't even visited. Then one morning they happened to look up to see Chicoree busily pulling out and eating séeds from one of the sunflowers just above them. Instantly they flew into a rage and started up that plant, Nanny leading and Danny right at her heels, Chicoree saw them com- ing and instantly guessea tnat these were the ones who had been taking seeds, and he also flew into a rage. "Thief! Thief!" squeaked Nan- ny as she peered over the eage of the flower head to which Chicoree was clinging as ne picked out and ate seeds. "Get away from my secds|" "Thief yourself!" cried Chic- cree, "They are my seeds and you are the ones who have been steal- ing them!" "No such thing chattered Dan- ny from a neighboring flower head, there not being room for him where Nanny was. "They are our seeds. I round them and they are ours. And if you are wise you will stay away." "Stay away from my own seeds! How do you get that way?" shrieked Chicoree, grow- ing more and more angry. He suddenly darted at Nanny and fit was by sheer good luck that she managed to dodge him. In a flash he was back again and this time he nearly knocked Nanny cff, He was a little yellow and black fury. And he had all the advantage, for he could dart in ana away while Nanny and Dan- ny could only cling to the big plant and dodge around the stem as best they might. But they were not a bit inclin- ed to yield. They snapped at him and squeaked with anger which amounted to fury, and called Chicoree a thief and a robber and all the unpleasant things they could thing of. Chicoree replied in kind, Although he was one to their two he was having ra- ther the best of it, for of course he was wholly at home in the air while Danny and Nanny were not at all a home so far above the ground. It was a most unpleasant quar- rel and such a foolish one, There were more of those sunflower seeds than Chicoree and all his family and Danny and Nanny Meadow Mouse and all their fam- ily could eat in a year. Further- more those seeds didn't belong to any of them, They belonged fo Farmer Brown, They were fighting over something they didn't own and to which none of them had any real right. Could anything be more foolish, But quarrels are foolish anyway and more is always lost than ever gained. (Copyright, 1931, by ¥.
