(146a) SINGLE UNEMPLOYED MEN WELL LOOKED AFTER IN VERDUN Montreal.--An efficient and prac- tical system for the maintenance of unemployed single men has been worked out by the city of Verdun, a suburb of Montreal. Last fall the Verdun Relief Society, organ- ized to take charge of the work, se cured two flats and in these quart- ers about 30 men are being housed. A general call for assistance was sent out to the merchants of the city and food and clothing have been contributed as needed. Over 2,500 meals have been provided and only $1041 has been spent. The men wash and repair their own clothing, and those with ex- perience as cooks prepare the meals for the whole number. They are given leave at regulated intervals to go out to look for employment, but otherwise spend their time with in doors working at assigned tasks. Strict rules, one being that every man must be in by nine o'clock at night, are enforced, the penalty for infraction being expulsion. The society 1s non-sectarian and non-racial in its work and any un- employed single man who has been a resident of Verdun for six months may go to the shelter for relief.
