WABC, Take It or Leave It. of Yours By James W. Barton, M.D. That Body | | A LARGE PERCENTAGE OF MENTAL CASES ARE CURED I have mentioned the fact befo.e that I was born opposite a large | rounded with stone walls and the | windows of which were strongly | barred. Every inmate was consid- | ered crazy yet I never could un- derstand how it was possible for the gateman who admitted wagons | and cabs was a patient yet was al- | lowed to be so near to freedom all | the time. i A little later when I saw patients | working in the large fields of the institution I wondered that they did not run away from or attack the guards in charge of them. There is more mentally afflicted people today than at any other time in history, more patients in mental hospitals than in all other hospitals combined. yet the outlook for the cure of these mental cases grows brighter every day and the percentage who are able to re- turn home and to their former oc- cupations is larger than ever before. The reason that more can now be done for mental cases is that | the stigma of having 'a member of | the family enter a mental hospi- | tal is rapidly disappearing as it is | known that mental 'illness' is the | same as physical illness. 1 tal symptoms just as it can cause stomach ulcer or heart disease. The fact also that mental ailments are recognized earlier than in former years means that treatment is giv- en sooner and early treatment na- turally bring better results. Dr. Winifred Overholder, Super- intendent St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Washnigton, in Scientific Monthly, states that in 1933 for every 100 patients admitted to mental hospi- tals, 46 were discharged, 39 of whom were considered cured or improved. Of those discharged 22 per cent. had been in the mental hospital for two months or less; 55 per cent. for less than six months; 74 per cent, for less than one year; and 87 per cent. for less than two years. At the end of ten years it has been found that one-half of all the patients discharged are living in their communities. The above information teaches us | First, that a large per- | two things. centage of mental patients recover, and second, treatment is given, the greater is the chance for cure.
