The ladies decided to hold an ice cream social on Wednesday night, July 31, Cake will be served with the ice cream and a good program pro- vided. The Orange Order celebrated in Lindsay on the 12th. Borry to report the serious ill- ness of Mr. N. Brown. Mr. Brown suffered a stroke some two weeks ago which rendered him helpless. We extend our sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Luther Mitchell in the loss of their home and contents by fire. Both Mr. and Mrs, Mitchell are Utica people both having lived here all their young life. S. and Mrs. Bryant spent the week- end at Huntsville, Fred and Mrs. Gibson, of Green- wood, spent Sunday at Grasmere farm. Mrs. Ward, of Texas, is visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Bryant. Audley ball team' platyed the final game at Pickering on Monday eve- ning, against Whitevale. "Use common sense--it's cheap insurance," the bulletin stresses. Listed as ways to keep free from accidents during the summer are: drive carefully, swim safely, be careful in boats and canoes, know where you dive, watch your step and avoid falls, learn to | 'recognize poison ivy, avoid over=- exertion, and attend promptly to cuts and scratches. BROOKLIN (Mrs. G. M. White, Correspondent) Brooklin, July 16.--Mrs. H. Arksey gave her home on Wednesday for the meeting of the several groups of the Women's Association when about twenty-five ladies were pres ent. The meeting was arranged by the Sunshine group of which Mrs. H. Arksey is the leader. Mrs. N. J. White took the devotional study which was based on a selection from Jeremiah 29:11. "For I know the thoughts that J think toward you saith the Lord; thoughts of peace and not of evil" Mrs. W. A. Dry- den brought a helpful message on Peace using the hymn "Peace, Per- fect Peace" as a basis for her study. Mrs. McNeely read a paper on the subject "What is Religion?" Mrs. C. Pengelly gave a plano solo. The Roll Call was most interesting as each answered by giving the maiden name of her mother. The usual business was discussed with Mrs. W_ Sonley taking charge of the entire meeting. Plans were made to improve the church grounds. The Sunshine group served after- noon tea and a very happy social hour was spent. The Women's Institute sponsored a meeting on Wednesday night in the Township Hall when Mrs. Grange gave a demonstration with lantern slides on the use of a new kitchen gadget which extracts vege- table juices which are so needful for good health. Causes of various diseases were explained and muck helpful information given. Abou' twenty ladies attended. A meeting of the Presidents of the Western Section of Oshawa Presbyterial was held on Thursday at the home of Mrs. N. J. White, Mrs. George Bray of Oshawa con- ducted the meeting and plans were made for the Sectional Rally which will be held in Columbus in October. General work in relation to the Woman's Missionary Society was discussed and plans made for the coming months. Mrs. George Honey, President of the Presbyter- ial and Mrs. Wager, Vice-President of the Eastern Section, were present. Mr. J Allems and family wish to express sincere appreciation to | neighbors and friends for their kind | expressions of sympathy during the | time of bereavement in the lost of | a beloved wife and mother. Red Cross Notes Mrs. W. Mediand and Mrs. J. Blight have been appointed by the Red Cros Society to distribute work and pack supplies. This work has been done by Miss Olver and her committee since the organization but Miss Olver leaves soon for the North. where she spends several months at her Point au Baril home. The Senior Red Cross Chapter met on Thursday in the Masonic Hall sewing rooms with a splendid attendance, The quilt which was started the previous week was com- pleted and a good deal of work done on handkerchiefs and pyjamas. Mrs. Gooderam donated ten yards of flannelette for refugee work. Mrs. McNeely and Mrs. Bailey were in charge of the work. Mrs. Boyd re- ported 13 pairs army socks, 2 pairs seamans socks, 1 sweater and 4 scarves. The Junior groun held their regu- lar meeting on Priday with Miss Simpson in charge. The girls are working now on triangular band- ages (slings) and accomplished a great deal of work, The attendance was fairly good but all the girls of the community are not in the group and they are urgently requested to atend and help with the work. The Tennis Club met last week end talked over the work of th» Club for the summer season. The officers were re-elected as last year with Mr. Murray Robinson as President and Mr. P. Journeaux as Secretary-Treasurer. The fee is to remain as formerly and the club anticipate an enjoyable season. Miss Ruth Robinson has secured the Dryden School (SS. No. 1) for next year. Her many friends in this vicinity will be glad to know she will be back in Brooklin again. Mrs. W. Agar spent several days last week with friends in Guelph. Bethesda United Church was made into a bower of floral beauty on Saturday when ferns, delphin- fums and spireas were massed across the entire choir loft and pulpit. The scene was the wedding of Eulah Irene Parish, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Ellsworth Parish of Uxbridge and formerly of Brooklin to Howard Bernard Shier of Sunder. land. The bride who was given in marriage by her father wore g gown of {vory satin with net veil caught in a coronet with orange blossoms and in full length with train which was carried by little Bobby Palmer. She carried 3 white Bible with satin streamers and a bouquet of rose buds, corn flower, forget-me-nots and baby's breath. Her attendants were Miss Doris Ross of Toronto as bridesmaid in g gown of orchid net over taffeta, She wore a halo of orchid net and carried a bouquet of yellow iris, roge buds and baby's breath, Miss Pauline Shier, sister of the groom was maid of honor in a gown of pink sheer and carried blue iris, rose buds and baby's breath. Mr. P. D. Colgrove of Toronto supported the groom. The ushers were Mr, 'Morley Parish, 'brother of the bride and Mr. J. Peterson, Oshawa, cousin of the groom. The wedding music was played by Miss Reta Parish, Brook- lin, in several piano selections be- fore the bridal party arrived and in the -sclos, "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes," and "I Love You Truly," before the ceremony, and "Because" during the signing of the register, by Miss Marian Dyer of Toronto. A reception and buffet luncheon followed at the home of the bride's parents when sixty guests were present. Mrs. Parish wore a gown of navy sheer with white hat and accessories and Mrs, Shier chose the same colors in sheer with white. Friends who assisted in serving were Lilian Parish, Maxine Parish, Edith McArthur and Kay Sharp. For travelling the bride wore heavenly blue sheer with white coat, hat and accessories. After a honeymoon at Porcupine and other north@m points, Mr. and Mrs. Shier will live near Sunderland. Mr. W. Parish, Mrs. Parich and Miss Reta Parish were Brooklin guests at the Shier-Parish wedding. Word was received last week of the death of Mrs. Joseph Blair of Breton, Alberta. The late Mrz. Blair was a sister of the late Wesley Harvey, and was in her 83rd year. She lived at Brooklin some years ago and will be remembered by a number of old friends. Miss Marjery Parkin of the staff of the Ontario Hospital at Whitby is home for g two weeks holiday. Caesarea is the popular resort for the people of this community and each week-end and days through the week as well find numbers of our people there. Mr. and Mrs, A. J. Cook have taken a cottage for two weeks and are there with friends. Mrs. F. Parkin is spending this week there with 'friends also. Others who spent the week-end were Mr. and Mrs. H. Arksey and sons, Mr. E. Speers, Mr. Gordon Cook, Mr. W. Wilson and Mr, Leon- ard Routley. : Mr. and Mrs. C. Grass and Mrs. Frazer are at their summer home at Caesarea. Mr. and Mrs. J. Blight are at Beaverton for their sumer vacation, occupying one of the McBrien cot- tages. The Women's Missionary Society meets today, Wednesday, at the home of Miss A. Olver. The Assocl- ate Helpers will be guests at this meeting. All the ladies are invited. Mr. and Mrs. R, Stoker, of Myrtle, Manitoba, called on Mr. and Mrs. George Jeffery last week and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Lucas and #on Bob and Miss M. Lucas, of Toronto, spent the week-end at the Jeffery home. Mr. and Mrs. F. Holliday were in Tweed visiting with Mr. and Mrs. George Woodhouse on Sunday. The Junior Farmers and Junior Institute are entertaining the "Rotary Anns" in a tour of farms today, Wednesday, in this district. Some of the farms visited will be those of Mr. FF. Batty, Mr. W, Dry- den, Mr. Pred Holliday, Mr. PF. Green, and Mr. J. Millar, The party will be entertained at the Millar home at "Thistle Ha" at the end of the tour when the girls will serve luncheon. . The football game this week for Brooklin was a game with Clare- mont team played at Claremont. The visiting team were defeated in a score of 4-1. Softball for the girls of the Brook. lin team was g game at Oshawa on Thursday night when they met the Bell Telephone girls' team at | Alexandra Park in a very lively game when the home team suffered a defeat in a score of 29-15. Billy Heron, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Heron, has enlisted with the Canadian Army and is with the regiment at Picton. Owing to rain on the nights set for lacrosse, there were no games last week. The. next game at Brooklin will be played on Satur- day night, July 20, with Oshawa the visiting team. Brooklin goes to East York on Thursday, July 18. Miss Luella Mowbray spent sev- eral days last week with Miss Tamblyn, in Toronto. Mr. Alfred Roger's friends will be glad to know that he is home from Oshawa Hospital and gradually gaining strength. Miss Victoria Agar is spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Mowbray, at Kinsale, Mr. Stanley Hatch, Toronto, was a guest at Mr. R. R. Mowbary's home on Sunday.
