Whitby must win tonight's game here in order to have a chance of overtaking the fast-stepping Rob- son leather team. *» ¢ 9» Since they must win, no doubt their ace "Taffy" Mayne will go to the mound tonight, but there's always a chance that Bill Kapasinski, the husky lad- die who tops six feet quite eas- ily, may do the pitching. Kap- ssinski defeated Pepsi-Colas in Whitby, the last time the two teams clashed. Mayne, Law, Baz. Bye and their other hard hitters will all be on hand and the Pepsi-Colas are expecting a busy night. *> + @ The Pepsi-Colas are out to win, too, for they are far from out of the woods yet. The win over Fiber- glas the other night puts them in third place but the glass-makers are hot on their heels. A win over Whitby tonight would just about clinch third place for Pepsi- Colas, in fact it would put them within resch of catching Whitby in 8 tie for second place. Pepsi-Colas have lost five games so far while Whitby has lost four. The Pepsi's fielded an improved hitting team the other night and if they can start clicking against Whitby this i evening, it will be another exciting ; bell game. ® oo Junior games tonight will find Westmount Brones visiting Bill's Place while St. John's and Dix- om's Coal tangle at Cowan's Park. Broncs should win down st Lakeview but that game at Cowan's will likely be a real thriller. . * % Oo Three softball games were run off last night. In a postponed Junior tilt, Bill's Place whipped St. John's and thus pushed the Saints into the cellar. In the Juvenile League, Westmount Mounties almost defeat- od Lions, who had to go into the eighth inning to win out. Victors proved "easy meat" for ¢H€ Terriers. * + 9 NOTE: In order to publish the standing in the Junior softball lea- gue, we would like each team man- ager to submit at once his team's record, number of games won and lost or tied. * 4 Oshawa balisters dropped a game Iast night and it was a good time to take a bad beat- SAVE As Much as the Full Amount of the Tax Increase on Brand New 1940 CHEVROLET Oldsmobile Numerous Models and Colour Choices. It was an exhibition game against Good Rich Oilers. The Oshawa boys were a little short in infield strength but Peg Hurst took over Juben- ville's duties and did a good Job. As a team, the Oshawa boys didn't hit as hard as usual while the Oilers pounded Mc- Garry hard and Biddle also. At that, the winners got most of their runs in the last two in- nings. *> + @ Coach Tracy Shaw, wno used to be an outstanding baseball cstcher, donned the pads last night and worked a few Innings behind the plate. While still a long way from being in first-class shape, the sil- ver-haired mentor showed flashes of his old-time form. With & couple ,0f more workouts, he would be able to take his place behind the plate, regularly. >» @ Oshawa Golf Club will be the scene of an O.G.A. invitation golf tournament this Saturday afternoon, when some of the most outstanding golfers of On- tario will be on hand to try their shots on the local course, * + @ Hammerin' Hank Armstrong last i night, defeated Lew Jenkins, the lightweight champion. It wss a torrid scrap and the fight fans saw as much action in six rounds as most "title bouts" provide in 12 or 15 rounds. > * % Oshawa Coca-Colas chalked up another nice win last night when they defeated Peterboro 17-13. The visiting Liftlock City squad were very much in the picture all the way and it was- n't until Chuck Barron scored four goals in a row in the last 'period, that the Oshawa fans felt the game was really safe. Kennie Sanders then scored three in a row, just to make it more binding. +» + + It was a good game, with plenty of excitement and 'interest all the way. Oshawa headed the scora- sheet from the time Armour opened it up in the first ten seconds. How- ever, Peterboro dominated the play in the third=and scored the first goal of the last period to make it 9-9 but after that, the homesters untracked themselves and clicked on some neat passing plays for pretty goals. * + * Peterboro hasn't defeated Oshawa Coca-Celas yet this sea- son but tomorrow night the lo- cals visit the Liftlock City and the .Peterboro Club has issued warning that things are going to be different. * % Minor League lacrosse teams are in action on Saturdety again as well as next Monday night, before the East York-Oshawa game. The schedules for these two sessions, appear in today's issue. Terriers Trim Victors Easily Pet Stock Terriers moved up into second place again last night when they trounced Victors 16 to 4 in a scheduled tilt. Morphy hit a triple in the first inning and this more or less ac- counted for the first two runs of the game but Terriers came back in their half of the seme inning to pound the offerings of Hobbs and pile up ten runs. A triple by Daw- son was the big blow of the game while errors by Morphy and Baxter, together with two walks, didn't help much. Terriers pushed across three more in the second inning and two in the third. Errors and walks provided the downfall of the Victors, for their pitching was weak and the support was -even weaker, . Morphy had two doubles to lead the Victors at bat while Bryant had a double and Hobbs had a triple Morey, E. Barker, Branton and W. Barker were the big hitters for the winners. The tour- nament will be the same as the others in the series, the field being divided into three handicap classes, 9 and under, 10 to 20 and 21 to 32, and there will be two gross and two net prizes in each class. There is no distinction between the prizes in the three classes. In addition, there will be four prizes for the quartette from any one club which returns the lowest gross aggregate score for the 18 holes. The "B" and "C" classes, 10 to 20 and 21 to 32, respectively, are steadily growing in popularity with club members as they offer an op- portunity to high handicap players to compete under tournament con- ditions against players of similar golfing ability, Every entrant who has not ready received a 1940 O.G.A: handicap card will be presented with one with the compliments of the Association. Players with club handicaps of 10 and over have two strokes added when receiving 'an 0O.G.A. handicap. The tee at Oshawa will be open from 1030 am. to 430 pm on Saturday and post entries will be accepted. Players who wish a defi- nite starting time should notify the O.G.A. office, 357 Bay Street, To- ronto, by Friday night, so that these times may be reserved. En- trants may arrange their own three- somes or foursomes. The tourna- ment is open to all amateurs be- longing to O.G.A. clubs or to clubs in any recognized golf association.
