Jackson Fairbank "Cleric Draws Lesson for Residents (By Rev. A. J. Jackson) For years to come the nations of the earth will draft indelible lessons from the downfall of democratic France. These lessons will be many. But none should be so profound and penetrating to sister democracies as the failure of France to fulfil the inexorable law of God: "To replen- ish the earth and subdue it." France for many years has suf- fered a declining birth rate. Since the Great War her population has decreased by thousands, &ze by tens of thousands. Such a condition but emphasizes one thing -- de- cadence' A people so selfish and irresponsible that it with amuse- ment declines to further the future of itself deserves to perish. To speak otherwise is to betray the foundations of moral teaching. Much is heard of the city of Paris. That city is spoken of as representing the heart of the nation. If this is true it is most suggestive. We have known Paris as a city of gaiety and fun; the playground where many wealthy have foolishly wasted their substance. Further it is definitely a city of apartment houses and flats, whose occupants for the most part, have but one philosophy: To get as much out of life and to give as little. If this, then, has been the heart of the netion, it is not surprising that the body has suffered a grievous heart attack. And to save that heart, liberty and fraternity have been surrendered. Better to do this, is the advice, than that one corner- stone of the city should be torn from its mortar. The prescription is but the burizd office of decadence. Now this demand for ease, this suicide of posterity is something that sister nations can seriously | anonymous. think over, Indeed, we look ask- ance at preaching conditions in our own democracy. Position and pos- session are not passports to live in the land of the lotus-eaters. Most certeinly they are talents demand- ing from those who .enjoy the ut- most in service and the largest sense of stewardship. Further, we observe with alarm the rapid growth of apartment houses in our own dist- rict. We have a suspicion that the owners of these comfortable places look most unkindly upon the pres- ence of children. Some go so far as to forbid them. To the occu- pants this prohibition is of no great moment. Indeed it only relieves them of their responsibility and is an excuse that solves their con- science as they endeavor to escape the inexorable of the Almighty. Against such who pursue this sel- fish and iresponsible course a vig- orous public opinion is devoutly to be wished. They are the greatest enemies of free institutions. They make the future well nigh impos- sible. This it was that destroyed the hesrt and body of La Belle France; a profound lesson verily to be learned. GIFTS TO THE GOVERNMENT One of the methods by which many Canadians are revealing their patrioiic helpfulness is in making zifts to the Government to help on the war effort, says 'Canada's Weekly". Individually the great majority of these gifts may seem insignificant, but collectively they make an impressive total. The most recent gift has been a donation of $100,000 by the Hon. E. W. Ham- ber, Lieutenant-Governor of Brit- ish Columbia, and Mrs. Hamber, Side by side with the announce- ment of the Hamber gift came a contribution of $1,000 from a lady in Ottawa who wished to remain Nor have these gifts been confined to Canadians. Quite a number have come from Ameri- cans in appreciation of happy Ca= nadian memories, or as a tribute to Canada's stand for democracy. Only the other day an unidentified person living south of the border received a matured Canadian Gov~ ernment annuity of $191, and promptly returned it to Ottawa with the request that it be used to further Canada's war effort. War conditions disrupt foreign markets. That is just one reason more why the Canadian consump tion of Canadian fish must be in= creased in order to assure a prose perous industry Ny pity 3) grRigps ME IT'S A BLACK CAT) That fine aroma of Black Cat's pure; unadulterated Virginia leaf scores a goal every time!
