CANADIAN TROOPS LIKED IN ICELAND Are Winning Good Will, Says Native of Island, Re- turning to Winnipeg SOMEWHERE IN ENGLAND, Aug. 8.--Perspiring end dust-be- grimed, but still smiling, new ar- rivals of the 2nd Canadian Division returned to barracks after a crowd- ed day's program along England's winding country roads and on the parade grounds where famous Brit- ish regiments have drilled. The men simply revelled in the first real outdoor workout since they marched from their Canadian training camps some time ago for the great adventure. Wearing light denim overalls, the Canucks offer- ed sharp contrast to the imperial troops drilling near by in battle dress, web equipment and steel hel- mets. That will come later as the hardening process of training pro- ceeds, The Canadians confined their ex- ercises to brisk sessions of "PT," squad and company drill, followed by a short route march. Except for a change in actors, the scene was much the same as presented by Canadian units which. have gone on before and now are on vigilant guard at their stations somewhere along the Motherland's far-flung battlements. There was this difference, however they made their bow before an audience including seasoned troops who have elected to continue the fight against the common enemy as free soldiers of France. The veteran French soldiers were impressed by the fitness and smart appearance of the new- comers. Meanwhile battalion and division headquarters buzzed with activity of organization. Some of the spade- work has been accomplished by staff officers who came over as and Lloyd Lee, Seagrave. an advance guard hut much still remains to be done in the process of settling down. Visit Hearquarters Maj.-Gen. Victor Odlum, general officer commanding the 2nd Divi- sicn, and senior members of his staff have been in constant con- ference with ranking officers of the Canadian military headquar- ters. Pressing duties kept them in London most of the day. Other branches of the division | have been occupied fitting and re- | distributing billets, drawing stores , and equipment. Scotland holds a wide edge over London as a point of attraction ! among the early applicants for | "time out." There's a good rea- son -- a majority of the laddies | from the Western Ontario Scottish Regiment have friends or relatives | up north. | In a large contingent bound for the Land o'Heather is Sgt. "I saw her when | close after creating | Concluding a report purporting to | weapons both for war and pre-war | "Further the United States is par- | | and I was serving with the British | | navy in the last war. Now I'll be | | able to greet her like a real Scot | wearing kilts." | Aylmer Soldier Pte. James Campoell also was in | a hurry to breathe salty air around | | his native Greenock. His urge to | join up was so great Campbell sold | his farm near Aylmer, Ont., and a | few days later was proudly sport- |'ing the board balmoral of his fav- | orite regiment. Bugler A. R. Kingston, another Windsorite, was rather doubtful as | to where he was going to take his | | leave. *" I must have more than 100 rela- tives in the Old Country although so far I've had no luck in tracing any of them, he said. "Still Ill | find them all right. In a pinch | I'll blow a clan call which should | do the trick." But London gets the call for most of the volunteers from the | United States. "We've heard so much about the place and now we'll have a chance testing out the so-called terrors | of the city's blackout," said Pte. | P. J. Duignan, sheriff of Kankakee, Ill. He and | his pals brought -along their flash- | lights and stocked up with an ex- | tra Supply of batteries jus of batteries juss in case. MONTREAL BOARD Council Quickly Deletes Contentious Registration | Item from Agenda Montreal, Aug. 8.--Montreal's city council moved speedily today to drop from its order paper an item | concerning 'national registration conscription" Camillien Houde had inserted prior | to his internment Monday a | which Mayor | the War Measures Act. The thirty-six man council, meet- ing under the chairmanship of pro- Mayor Edmond Hamelin, voted 27-2 | to kill the item immediately after | carrying by vote of 25-4 another | | motion preventing discussion on the matter. Sponsor of the motions | was Alderman Goyette of St. Jean | Baptiste Ward. At the same time, the council heard notice of motion by Alder- | man James Donnelly to make avail. able for military use municipal buildings, lands and . mechanical equipment "which might be need- ed." Houde's arrest followed a state- ment by him opposing the national registration and In which he at- tacked an order allowing use of municipal buildings for the regis- tration. Montrealers heard another echo of the "Affaire Houde." Authorities reported the Mayor's name had been almost erased in some un- known person's attempt to chisel it from a monument on Mount Royal Lookout commemorating the Royal visit.
