C. Hall, Danville Virginia Medical Monthly reports five cases in which sugar was per- sistently present in the urine yet patients were not diabetics. By ex. amination it was found that the amount of sugar in their blood was below the percentage found in dia- betes. Three of the five patients received insulin with little effect for varying lengths of time, one for nearly nine years. None of these individuals had any of the usual symptoms of diabetes such as tiredness and loss of strength. Examination showed all to be in normal health. Only one had a family history of diabetes. The patient who received the in- sulin for nine years was found to have sugar in his urine while taking the insulin but none has been found since he stopped taking the insulin. The fact that having sugar in the urine, even to the extent that is considered a definite sign of dia- betes, {s harmless or is not a symp- tom of disease, i= shown by the fact that this patient, after stopping in- sulin after nine years' use, looks and feels well. I have spoken before of diabetes insipidus in which the patient pass. es large quantities of urine, but the urine does not contain sugar. The thought then is not to get alarmed If urine on first test shows sugar in amount found in diabetes. If urine is tested after a heavy starch meal, excess sugar may be found, And even when sugar is found during a period of fasting, true diabetes may not be present. The examination of the blood gives the true story. in the | ON THIS DATE | - By --- FRED WILLIAMS that further pressure was necessary if the government was to be "per- suaded to do its duty," and so this Toronto meeting was held on Aug- ust 17, 1840, four months after the outrage. Speeches were made by Sir Allan MacNab, Col. John Prince of Windsor), Col. George Denison of the York Dragoons, predecessors of the Governor - General's Horse Guards, and others from outside points. But despite this military pressure it was many years before once again a monument lifted its head on Queenston Heights. The patriotic spirit was willing, but the financial pulse was weak. The first monu- ment had been built at the ex- pense of the British government. It was not in fact until 1858 that the second monument was dedicated and the bodies of Brock Macdon- nell again placed under the pillar (they had rested meantime in old Fort George.) This second monu- ment cost £10,000 ($50,000) partial. ly raised by public subscription, the balance out of the public treasury. It is 190 feet high, 55 feet taller than the original, and has ever since dominated the Niagara land- scape and been 5 great magnet for tourists from all over the world.
