Pete Hastings and his Derbys ame to the Motor City determined o open the series with a win but they were frustrated by a nifty pitching performance by Steamer Lucas and some brilliant "clutch" hitting by Doc Rowden and Moose Matthews, who themselves were paced by the youthful third-sacker, Johnny Kitchen, Derbys Score First Parkdales opened the scoring in the initial stanza when with two out, Harrison singled into right, moved the next two bases on a pas- sed ball and g steal and then scored after Flake had walked, on a clean hit by Hank Nairn. In the fourth inning, Flake op- ened - with a grcunder to Dalton and went to second when "Dolly" threw over Wallace's head. He went to 3rd on a wild pitch and scored when Surphlis singled into left. That ended the scoring success for the Derbys. They threatened two or three times after that, des- pite the steady pitching by Lucas, but when he faltered, his mates stepped in with some nifty plays to shut off the rallies. Brilliant Fielding In the 6th it was a double-play that nipped the rally. In the 7th, Lucas himself fanned Terry for the second out and Jubenville made the toss-out to end the inning. In the 8th, with two men on bases, via hits, Dalton came up with the third put- cut and in the 9th, with two men on bases again, on hits, and only one out, Jubenville and Dalton whipped off another one of their | neat double-plays to end the game. In the 9th, pinch-hitter Alex Levin- sky came through with a hit to create the tense situation that ex- Isted just before the twin-kill. Despite the twin-killing however, it was Parkdales who grabbed the limelight for defensive highlights, with Jeffers making a brilliant shoe- string catch to rob Matthews in the first inning and Crawford making a one-handed stab to retire Lucas, on a nice bid. Two Big Rallies With one out, Steamer Lucas himself started off the rally that won the ball game. It came in the third inning and his single was promptly followed by another, this one by Dalton. Then Peg Hurst walked to fill the bases. Kitchen drilled one through Harrison and the error permitted two runs to score. Matthews grounded out but Doc Rowden came through with a neat single to left, scoring Hurst and Kitchen, to make the score 4-1. In the 5th inning, Kitchen singled through short and scored on a hefty triple by Moose Matthews. Row- den's.second single scored Matthews with the last run of the game. Osh- awa loaded the bases in the 7th but couldnt score. Kitchen and Harrison paced their respective clubs at the plate with three hits each in four trips. Nairn and Surphlis each had two bingles for the Derbys while Matthews and Rowden did likewise for the home club. The hits by Dalton and Lucas came in the best possible time, The added excitement for the game was provided in the fifth when Tracy Shaw was ejected from the ganfe, by Umpire Babe Shepperd, for. objecting too strenuously to a called Ythird strike". Peg Hurst took over the catching duties and Maxie Yourth wen' to centre for the balance of the game. Box Seore Parkdale Derbys AB.R.H.P. 0 .E. o Surphlis, 3b. Crawford, 1b. .... Jeffers, If. YEAR. s oA GABBY WA TE SPOT EARLIER IN THE SEASON Senators Knock Tigers from Top Detroit, Sept. 16.--Emil (Dutch) Leonard yielded six scattered hits yesterday to dump Detroit Tigers out of first place in the American League pennant race and pace Washington Senators to a 6 to 1 victory. A nemesis to the Tigers most of the season, Leonard missed a shut- out when Rudy York clouted his twenty-eighth homer of the year in | the second inning. From the fifth inning until the ninth, when Prank (Pinky) Higgins was permitted to romp to third after hitting a single, Leonard al- lowed only one batsman to get as far as second base. The defeat, coupled with the twin victory Cleveland Indians scored over Philadelphia to go into first place by a one-game margin, fur- ther scrambled the league's hot flag chase. Leonard, in hanging up his four- teenth triumph, was in trouble only in one inning -- the fourth -- when the Tigers filled the sacks with one out. Then he bore down with his knuckle ball and forced the next two batters to foul out. The Senators jumped on Freddie Hutchinson at the start, scoring a run in the second cn Jimmy Blood- worth's home run. and then sent Freddie to the showers in the sixth after counting twice in the fifth, St. Louis Browns _ Yankees St. Louis, Sept. 16.--The giant= killing St, Louis Browns threw the hectic American League pennant race into further confusion yester- day by giving the world champion New York Yankees a double drub- bing, 10-5 and 2-1, before the larg- est Brownie daytime crowd in twelve years, ! The twin setback not only jolted | the Yanks' hopes of annexing a fifth straight pennant, but reduced their third-place margin to a mere half-game over the White Sox, who won twice from Boston. Joe Grace's home run with Bob Swift on base in the fifth inning against Ernie Bonham, New York's sensational young righthander, suf- ficed to captiire the second game RHEUMATIC Accept This Generous Offer if one bottle of Ru-Ma does not give you relief from rheumatic aches and pains, sore, swollen and pain- ful joints.
