Barton, M.D. GETTING RID OF GAS PAINS We have all seen mothers pick up a crying child, place it with head over one of her shoulders. or turn it over on its stomack or raise head up or let head hang a little lower than the feet. In a minute the child will gurgle, bring up gas or "wind" and stop crying. Children's specialists tell up that the cause of wind or gas in the stomach is that the youngster con- tinues to suck on the breast or the nipple of a bottle for a long time after he has had all the milk he wants. Thus instead of drawing milk into his stomach, he draws air, with the result that the pressure of this air in his stomach or intest- ine causes the pain. By not allowing him to "feed" too long at a time, AAA of Edmonton, Mrs. Mullen, formerly | the entrance of enough air to cause | pain can be prevented. And should | the air accumulate in stomach ft | can be brought up by moving the | youngster about or changing his | position. Giving "him plenty of | space to move about or kick his feet should prevent gas pains. As a matter of fact, this same rule applies to adults. While sipping | ater, tea, or other liquid, it is not -» POLLY AND HER PALS unusual for them to draw air down into the stomach. Air is also drawn when they are upset or excited at meals and the pain from gas pres- sure is thought due to indigestion caused by the emotional disturban- ce. This pressure pain from gas in stomach can be so severe that. the individual thinks he has angina pectoris or some disturbance of the heart. I have spoken before of a patient who complained of these pains and knew his heart was as "big as a football", whom I rushed to the X-ray department of the nearest hospital and by means of a mirror and fluroscope he was able to see his heart beating normally and a big ball of gas, the size of e toy balloon in his stomach. This gas bubble was pressing against the floor of the chest and it, in turn, against the heart, By having him bend from side to side and kneel on a chair and put his head to the floor between his hands he gurgled up the gas and obtained relief, And just as a baby gets relief from gas pains by moving about or getting moved about, so can adults, by moving about, by bending the body, rotating the body on the hips, fast walking and other ways, usual- ly get rid of gas pains ENEMY SHELL FOR LUCK London -- (CP) -- Only souvenir of more than 30 fights, a Royal Air Force officer carries with him everywhere a splinter from a Mes- serschmitt cannon which hit his plane on one trip. NATIONALE PARTY © BACKS DOPLESSS Onetime Quebec Premier to Contest Liberal Govern- ment Montreal, Oct. 30--Supporters of the Unjon Nationale Party endorsed the leadership of Maurice Duplessis, once Provincial Premier, at a meet. ing here. (Both parties will be given a~ chance to gauge their strength Nov. 19; when by-elections are schee" duled in Megantic and Terrebonne riding.) Speaking of recent efforts of Pre mier Godbout and members of his- Cabinet to spur French-speaking Canadians to learn English, Mr. Duplessis seid that "we appreciate the necessity of knowing English, but it is also the duty of a con- scientious Prime Minister to tell English-speaking residents to learn French."
