THE OSHAWA DAILY TIMES, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 1940 PAGE NIN Parent Problem | GARRY C. MYERS, Ph.D. "Dear Dr. Myers: I wish you could advise me in regard to my son. He is twelve years old and makes at times the most peculiar noises and faces. I have been scold- ing him for years to stop doing these things but it doesn't help. «what would you advise me is the reason that he makes these noises and faces?" My reply: t "It is easy to see that you have been annoyed by the 'noises and faces' your boy makes. Did it ever occur to you how much he has been annoyed by you? I am not scolding you, Mrs----, I'm just trying to help you understand your child's problem. Bless you, he does not do these things to vex you. He does them because he is a very nervous child, a sick child. If you consult your doctor, he will doubtless tell you so, "You see, the more you are ir- ritated at his nervous expressions the more nervous he becomes. Think how discouraged he must feel as you nag at him for doing what he is sure he can't help from doing. Discipline Yourself "In order to quit harming your poy and turn to helping him, you will first have to change yourself. You will have to discipline yourself AMONG THE LATEST STYLES First place in your housekeeping to show no emotion whatsoever over 1s 'noises and faces." You will be ible to do this best as you learn to put yourself in your imagination nto your boy's place and - feel a | little as he feels. Instead, you will, in his presence, assume an Guickly as possible: Coats, size 6 . 200 . 300 8 300 Skirts, siz i 100 Pullovers or blouses, size 38 Slips, size 44 Nightgowns, size 44 . air of all is well. To this end you will rest more and have more re- | laxation, letting many things about the house go if necessary. A week or two away from home may be re- | quired for you to regain complete | composure. With your self-master= ing should come similar self-mas- tery from other members of the family and relatives and close friends. When serene yourself and alone with him, put your arm around him and show him some affection. "The second part of your cam- paign should center on deriving a program of more relaxation for the boy. Hold him rigidly to regular hours of sleep. During the summer he should lie down and be quiet for 12 hours each afternoon. You might help calm him then by read- ing some to him. Also he should play out of doors but never to the point of excessive fatigue. A few weeks in a summer camp might help him, "Until you see marked improve- ment, keep him from .the movies entirely, Forbid his listening exciting radio programs indefinite- ly." y Solving Parent Problems Q.
