FUEL & GRAVEL, 342 Division St., Phone 3470, FIIIIIIIIIIN SCIENCE GASTS LIGHT ON STAR OF BETHLEHE Astronomer Holds Star Was Miraculous Quotes Bible Story Los Anegeles, Cal, Dec. 24 -- The Star of Bethlehem which guided the Wise Men of the East to the birth- place of Jesus could not possibly have been any known natural hea- venly body and must, instead, have been created by a miracle, accord- ing to Dr. Dinsmore Alter, astrono- mer at Griffith Observatory of the University of Southern California. 'That is the conclusion he has just reached and made public after years of study of the subject and in view of the latest findings of astronomi. cal science, "This conclusion," he declared, "neither adds nor detracts from the porbability of the Bibical story. If the birth of Christ, itself, was mira. culous, it is only reasonable to as. sume that the personality behind 211 of it might wish to acquaint the Wise Men of the fact by impressing the appearance of the star on their minds. Such a non-astronomical sensation would explain every de- tail of the story." ; 'Only Modern Theory Dr. Alter holds the view that the belief in an astronomical explana- tion of the Christmas star is chiefly a modern one. "Many people," he said, 'have been worried because astronomers have not found an explanation for a story which probably did not seem con- nected with astronomy in the mind of the original narrator. "The attitude of the averag churchman who is asked for his re * action to the conclusion that th Star of Bethlehem was a miracl and: not an astrmomical oeeurrenc ic generaly that it strengthens ra- ther than weakens his faith. It puts the whole thing on a higher plane." Neglect Passages In citing arguments to suggest the star might have been a natural ob- ject such as a comet, nova (new star), or unusual grouping of plan- ets, astronomers and others, aceord- ing to Dr. Alter, have neglected or side-stepped passages in the latter part of Matthew's account which disproved any natural interpreta- tion, He points out that no star. or ob- ject as high as five miles overhead could mark out an individual house clearly enou~h for the Wise Men to have found it. He calls atention to the fact that there is no record that any others saw the phenomenon. In fact, he declared, if others had seen fit, agents of Herod probably would have had it called to their atten tion and would have followed the moving body the few miles that led to Bethlehem and that the massa- cre which came afterwards would not have taken place. Quotes Bible Text "But a natural celestial body," he said, "could have been meant if the account had stonped with the ini- tial passage which reads: 'Now, when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod. there came wise men from the East to have seen His star in the East and Jerusalem, saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we are come to worship Him.' "The Wise Men do not say that the star had led them. Furthermore, it seems that the star was not visi- ble at the time they arrived at Jerusalem. They had seen it at a past time. And there is no mention of the number of Wise Men, "Each Christmas season," he ex- plained, "a number of articles con- cerning the story of the Christmas star appear. Perhaps even worse than the lack of scientific accuracy is the neglect of the story itself. The duty of Griffith Obeervatory is to inter- pret simply all sorts of astronomical matters, Of course, another reason for the present stuiy was the pre- sentation of a new method of in.
