[ l \ THE OSHAWA, DAILY TIMES, MONDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1940 Oshawa GM-Men Earn Tie in Great Game at Falls -- London Here Tonight | Johnny Thompson Gets 3 of 'em As "GM-Men" Tie Brights 4-4 Homesters Score Tying Goal With Less Than 2 Minutes Left to Play-to Prevent Oshawa Victory --Motor City Team Were Without Defense- men Maundrell and 12,000 SEE Ritchie (Special to The Times) Oshawa GM-Men came within less than two minutes of handing the league-leading Niagara Falls Brights a defeat, when they tangled in the Cataract City on Friday night. Ten minutes of overtime failed to produce any additional scoring and the teams left the ice, deadlocked at a 4-4 score, to split the points. One of the largest crowds of the season was in attendance and they were treated to a rousing tussle that had plenty of pep and action in all stages. The homesters jumped into a 2-0) lead and held on for quite a while, | thanks to some sensational net-| minding by Mel Carey but finally Jerry Cooper conv erted Ab Barnes' pass into an Oshawa tally while Boston was serving a sentence. Johnny Thompson to Fore Johnny Thompson ripped in two quick goals within a few seconds, early in the second stanza, to put Oshawa out in front but Cooper got his second goal for the homesters to deadlock the count again. Lively action featured the middle frame with McAndrew getting him- self a misconduct penalty for talk- ing back to the referee, Johnny Jones. In the third stanza, while Mc- Andrew was serving another pen- alty, Oshawa ganged successfully end went out in fromt, Johnny Thompson getting his third goal of the game on a pass from Regina Tisdale. Daniels and Barnes Shine Brights fought desperately to get back into the running and the vis- iting GM-Men battled just as hard to hold out. Defencemen "Ab" Barnes and Don Daniels, Plaine almost sixty minutes each, due to the illness of both Doug. Maundrell and George Ritchie, did yoeman work on the rearguard, aided by short rests when Carl Gamble took a turn at blue-line duties and in- cidentally, did a nice job of it.- Just when it looked like an Ofhs awa victory, with less tham two minutes to play, Dalton Stir- ling's pass and beat Mc- Queston. Up until that fatal shot, McQueston and his m: had per- formed near-miracles $0 keep et homesters at bay. Barnes and Daniels, with thelr grand work on defense, together with Johnny Thompson's display on the attack, were the highlights of Oshawa's fine showing against the league-leaders. Every other mem- ber of the team turned in a grand game "as well, with Cooper, Tisdale and Covert being especially effect- ive. For the homesters, H. Cooper, Walton, Brenchley, Heximer, Bel- linger and Mcanfitew were all out- standing.
