This household necessity has been decidedly con~- spicuous for its absence since last Saturday, when it was first realized that there was an acute shortage of soap flakes, Of the nine local stores visited by this reporter yesterday, only one had a supply on hand and it was only two brands at that. A few of the stores have felt the shortage for at least three weeks but the majority has been aware of it this past week only. At every store it was claimed that the weekly or monthly quota from the retailers had been cut considerably, Grocers who obtained it directly from the warehouses declared that it was be- coming increasingly difficult to ob- tain a sufficient quantity. And what are the housewives do- ing without soap flakes? A few are content to use bar soaps but the majority is trusting to its luck te be in the stores whenever the few cartons available are put out on the shelves. At one store on a weekly quota basis, the comment, was: "We put it all out on the shelves as soon as it comes in, but it just disape pears!" There is no sign of increasing supplies as yet and so the house« wives must be economical and pati= ent until conditions improve, DR. R.
