Kit nodded .and, with a clatter hoofs, rode his black hunter, Diomed, out of the stable yard. Theresa's hoof marks showed up as Leman had said would. But they marked the gravel of the west drive, not the turf beside it. No, Kit guessed with a little smile, Ginnie, her saddle cold, would be little nervous of what Theresa, from her. stable, might do in those first few moments on the turf. But there was no need for nervousness. iA strange day it had been, e | had gone first to his wife's room. He had guessed then from the shadows under her eyes that she had not slept till very late. For a long moment he had stood look- ing down at her--at the dark lashes, at the face that was sad now even in her sleep. He had stooped and kissed her and she had not awakened. After breakfast he had re- turned to her room. She was gone, "No, sir. I where Mrs. Stone is," her maid had said. Indeed, she might have been anywhere in the great house. In the confusion of the morning it would in any case have been difficult to find her, for the whole day was filled with preparation for the ball. Everyone addressed themselves to him; for who could expect a bride of 18 years to deal with the traditional arrangements at Wanderslay? It was while he coped with the foreman of the London firm of caterers that, en- tering the billiard room, he had found Ginnie. She had looked up from where she sat in a deep chair, a volume open on her knee. Surely an ordi- nary "enough spectacle: Ginnie-- his wife--seated in a rather un- used room of his house, reading? He had felt amusement but he had felt pity . Indeed, why should she not wish to avoid him? If he was right--if she did love him---then he had most cruelly punished Stronger than pity had risen his longing and a vague anxiety. So that, when at luncheon time she a; he had felt a dis- proportionate relief. She hadn't, he remembered now, looked like anyone's wife. And in heart he had damned the excellent Wisbech, Oh, for the solitude of the Little House, where he would have stretched out his hand to her and she, perhaps, would have laid her hand in it---- k own "We will have coffee in my 8 study," he had told Wisbech, and had seen the faint color rise to Ginnie's cheek. Only two minutes had Wisbech detained him in the dining room oyer some detail of t: t's arrangement, but when he reached the study she was not there. His coffee had wn cold, waiting for her. He had gone to the window and far across the levels of the park he had seen her with Belle, strolling under the leaf- less trees. He remembered how he had laughed, setting down his cup with a violence that might have broken it. Striding across the hall, he had, of course, been waylaid by Wisbech with a trunk call, It was "Master Jerry"--so one always thought of one's young brother-in-law--regretting that he was "held up on the road", that he would not arrive until after the ball had started. Then his mother had telephoned.
