TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12, 1946 SEH ST MX THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE THIRTEEN World Recognizes Scarcity of Food In the October issue of Scienti- fic Agriculture, edited by the Agri- cultural Institute of Canada, Dr. J. P. Booth, Chief, Agricultural Economics Division, Dominion De- partment of Agriculture, contributes an article on the "Trends in the Development of Agricultural Econ omies in Canada", in which he out- the growth of agricultural economics and the increasingly im- t rol® it is destined to play the future, Canadian farmers, wrote Dr. Booth, have again become sonscious, perhaps more than at any time in Canadian history, of what a world in need of food can mean to them and they do it. There is hope on the horizon much of which stems from the creation of the Food and Agriculture Organization, the pro- vision for 'financing world ° trade, and the prospective formation of an international body to facoilitate rtade among nations. No longer does agriculture stand alone pleading for markets for its products. Thesworld has become conscious of the scarcity of food, As a solution to the problem of sur- pluses there has been added the conception of a world adequately fed. An international agency, the FAO, has been created to encour- age world thinking and to eo-or- dinate international action. The WINDOW CAULKING and GLAZING! It cannot function on pious | hopes and prayers, however, There must be action and action must be preceded by careful study. The plans already laid by the organiz- ation emphasize research in many fields, and the establishment of an economic division is a step in that direction, Canada will be expected to contrbute in various ways. FAO fs in a sense a symbol of a new thinking and "this thinking is also responsible for other develop- ments in internationalism -- in the fields of finance, communicatnon, and thade, to mention but three. Theh portend important ew devel- opment and no country or group will be more concerned with what thanspires than Canada and Ca- nadian farmers. Canadian farmers because of these developments will be . more concerned with what is taking place in other countries than ever be- fore. Agricultural departments will be expected to provide a service in respect of foreign agriculture, and, because most ofwhat takes place will be in the field of economics, it is apparent that agricultural economists will be called upon to make their contribution, TENTS, Tarpaulins REPAIRED ../ RENOVATED Also Manufactured!
