Georgia half-pleaded. It was nearly nine o'clock, and if only the telephone would grind out its fa- | miliar summons, that would mean she could get away and meet Curly on time. e was so impatient, so eager that they elope tho stufiy old town; he was so sweet. She moved nearer the 'phone, willing it to ring, She. glared at it, put a hand out toward it. But it remained an ola-fashioned 'phone on the wall, uncommunicative and obdurate. If only it could realize how important it was for her mother's Jong-aistance call to come through, "I don't at you to be lonel home there all by yourself, dear," Mrs. Patrick had fussed just before leaving to visit her sister in the city. - "I know it'll not be much fun in the house by your lonsome, You should go out with Paul, though; he's a Tam nice boy. ri Tong you Tuesday at nine to say ello Mrs. Patrick had not added, "And don't go out with Curly," but she had thought it, and Georgie knew it, It was just silly jealousy when Paul criticized Curly, but what had her own mother against him? Just tt he was "a stranger," because he was a visitor to Elmhurst; that was the only "reason," as far as she could see it. He was lots of fun, and charming, and he had a won- cderful car; and he was so hand- some, so romantic, rushing her off her feet; laughing at her shyness. Oh, life with him would be won- derful, wonderful! She 'looked down at her shabby suitcase, all packed and locked, as it stood by the worn mahogany hall table. She woula be "Mrs. Curly Brackett" in little over end hour! "Curly"--what was his Christian name? She'd forgotten to ask, and he had never said. Not that it mattered! Nothing mat- tered, except getting away from this "dull little berg," as Curly called her hometown, "with people listening in on the line." "Leave everything to me Curly had said. "We'll do a and Juliet." "But I've hon," Romeo got to wait for Mum's call at nine," she had been floatin, dreamily on a lovely cloud, an now practical facts were yanking her back to earth. "I promised, Curly." He had frowned, some of the ar- dor fading from his expressive dark eyes. Then he smiled, his usual handsome self. "Oh, well, hon," he had said. "The town's old cats, who are always listehing in might wonder if you didn't answer the 'phone; they might send out an alarm. And we want to be married first, don't we, eh?" Georgia looked at her watch, Her hand was shakine, it was dif- ficult to see. This was awful--it was 10 minutes after nine. Mum had said nine, h didn't she keep to it? Sill er to get angry at her mot or still, Curly didn't like to wait, He might get an- noyed, and she didn't want him to be mad with her, It was so quiet in the hall, and cool, is was home, and it was "homey." and it would be awful not to live here; but, still, she was 18, and a woman didn't meet a fellow jike Curly every day. Why didePaul run him down so? Jealousy, of course. Paul was all right, tall and slow, but he didn't need to be so crude, so outspoken. It he didn't like Curly, he aidn't have to say so, to call him names. Men were funny, It was oddly exciting to have two men "that way" about you, but Curly was the one, no doubt about it. Just then she saw Paul walking up the front path, even more slowly and deliberately than usual. Half-way up, he paused, and rubbed his hand across his fore- head in a tired sort of way. Had he come to visit her now, talk, waste her time? Quickly she snatched at the | dene receiver, putting one finger own on the hook. She was talk- ing casually into the mouthpiece, apparehtly to someone, when Paul oped by the front door. He Co! her through the glass. She waved at him, pointed to the ! telephone, shrugged as if to say, "See, I'm busy," and made "'Good- bye" motions to him, sha lips into the word, "Good-! But Paul did not go, Instead he opened the door. It slammed be- hind him. and he stood quietly in ing, her --Illustrated by Oscar. The town's old cats, who are al* ways listening in, might wonder if you didn't answer the 'phone. the hallway, just behind her. She could feel his eyes on her back. "Well, I've got to go now," she continued her fictitious conversa- tion into the mouthpiece, "Thanks for salling . . . yes, ~bye. She turned on him angrily, "Who asked you in, Paul? Really!" Paul looked at her steadily, quietly. Then he sald: "Who could you be talking to?" "Girl friend," she snapped. "Just because you work for the tele- phone company . . ." "I came to report to you," said Paul, "that the "phone is out of order. There's been an accident + + « Oh, Georgie, I hate to tell you --* Suddenly fear was 'with her, stopping her breathing. , "T-tell me what? Oh, Paul, don't look like that; tell me!" "I wish I could put things" nice- ly," Paul said at t, swallowing hard. Georgia noticed beads of sweat on his face and forehead, and a nerve twitching by his mouth, "I can only put things bluntly, that's my curse. It's your boy friend, Curly Brackett..I guess he was mad, or drunk, or some- thing, but he drove in 'the middle of the road, collided with another car, and his auto ended up against a telephone pole, knocking it ana the system down." "And--Curly?" Paul clenched his hands over hers trembling towards him. "He's dead," he said in a flat voice. Georgia leaned against the hall table. The world was spinning in a dizzy whirl -- or was it herself? "He got tired waiting for me, and he came to get me, an" then--that --happened--" "He wasn't coming this way, he was going. . Paul began, when Georgia cried out: "Going?" "I'm sorry, Georgie," Paul said, "But a lot of us who love you have known for a long time that he was no good. We weren't saying it to hurt you, but you wouldn't believe us, your mother and I. Count yourself a lucky girl--" "Lucky?" she stormed, *"If I'd gone as he asked, and not waited for Mum"s 'phone call . , ." 'Snap out of it! You'd have been sorry all your life, instead of just a little while, like now. I didn't want to tell you -- but we dug a girl out of the wreckage of his car. She was prétty badly mangled. But, the name on the identifica~ tion card in her purse read "Mrs. L. T. Brackett."
