TUESDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1946 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PACE FIVE WHITBY NEWS. Whitby Building Well ® Over $300,000 Mark Building permits representing building valued at $25,870 were issued in Whitby during November, according to figures released by H. Pringle, town engineer. This lifts Whitby's building program for 1947 well over the $300,000 mark. The greatest increase over last® year's figures is shown in permits for industrial construction which jumped from the 1945 figure ap- proximating $10,000 to over $100,000 for the first 11 months of this year. Permits were issued to build 45 new homes, most of these were in the price range of $3,000 to $5,000 with a few in higher brackets. This is more than a 100 per cent in- crease over the 1945 figures, when 'permits were issued for 21 homes Sed at $6,7000. rtion of the increase in in- an al permits can be traced to acceleration in established business- es and a subsequent expansion of plant but a worthwhile contribution came from new industries which have moved to the town in the past six or seven months. During November, Woodland Pro- ducts obtained a permit to erect a plant estimated to cost $14,000. Three permits were granted for erection of 'new homes valued at $2,000, $2,500 and $3,000. Alterations and repairs accounted for the bal- ance of the unusually high Novem- ber figure. Skate Exchange InTown Hall Wed. As the Young Women's Group of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church are holding a bazaar in the Council Chambers tomorrow afternoon; the Skate Swap Shop will be held in the Town Hall upstairs. The ladies were understandably surprised to hear that all these youngsters would be attending their bazaar, but the misunderstanding has been cleared up, and the skates should be brought into the upstairs part of the Town Hall. The hours for this swapping and exchanging of skates are from 3 to 5 p.m. Tomorrow the skates will be brought in, tagged and priced, and on the following Wednesday, fit- tings will be held to see how many of the young hockey fans can find suitable skates. The operation is under the direction of Gordon Mc- Mahon, assisted by members of the W.M.AA. Assessor Wili Inspect Buildings ! For $200 A Year After hearing the report from the special committee set up to in- vestigate the necessity for a full time building inspector, Town Coun- cil last night decided to add these duties to those of Fred. O'Dell, town assessor, works superintendent and week inspector, at the same time in- creasing his salary by $200 to cover the added work. The committee of Deputy Reeve Andrew Muir, Councillor J. Wilson and Town Engineer H. L. Pringle, reported that the job of building inspector did not require a man full time, and suggested that a man be hired for part time work, or the job be given to Mr. O'Dell. Mr. Pringle said that he would be ready to assist the assessor in the work. The committee also reported that they had examined some of the plans submitted for building permits, and were of the opinion that these plans should be' more complete as to specifications. Mr. Muir moved that Mr. O'Dell be appointed building inspector, and this motion was passed. ® Reader's Views On The Air Tonight and Wednesday | UFVALO "WER (CBS) 550 TOKONTO CKEY TORONTO CBL (NBC-CBS) 40 TORONTO CJBC (MBS-ABC) 1010 TORONTO BUFFALO CFRB WBEN (CBS-CBC) (NBC) 860 230 CHUM OSHAWA CHU CKDO 1050 140 BUFFALO WKBW (ABC) 1520 HOUSING STANDARDS Editor, Times-Gazette: Dear Sir: The statement that was made re- garding the housing needs of the nt | working man of this country at a meeting in this town, and credited to me, F. G. Underwood, by some reporters, was in error, and in my opinion, anything that could be built at the price quoted, would not conform with our bylaws 'r even be fit for human habitation. We as Canadians have raised our standard of living to its present high plane, and I do not want to be quoted as suggesting that it be lowered, as it wi be if citizeny were asked live in jerry-built homes of the calibre indicated by the price given. I would like to go on record as saying, that the workman of today is entitled to an even better home than those planned by the Inte- grated Housing Commission or Housing Enterprises, but can see no possibility of this happening hile the high price of materials is maintained. "PF. G. UNDERWOOD. Whitby, December 2, 1946. School Facts ((Continued from from Page 4) have expressed their approval of the proposed expenditure and also of '2 need for a ziew school. ET austive study by the Board of Education shows that if the Town of Whitby is to provide the utmost in educational advantages, what they now suggest is the very mini- mum to meet present requiremenst. Your approval of the project will not provide facilities for educational advancement but will be distinct cultural value to the community, in that an auditorium seating 400-500 is embodied in the plan. This will fit in well with the town's recrea- tional program. Mindful of the very substantial amount involved in this project the Board - of Education are giving every consideration and encourage- ment to the distribution of sub- contracts to local tradesmen. This would mean that a large portion of the expenditure would be distri- buted locally.
