Shoulder Padding Reported Going Out By HELEN BEATTIE New York, Jan. 10--Apart from the two-inch skirts, most im- portant fashion news here is that Hattie Carnegie is working back toward the natursl shoulder, and many of her new designs have no in them at all. / : In the press showing last night there were some suits and dresses with padding, but for the most part she is featuring the fichu collar, which is the recurring note in her | new collection. Still Hiccoughing After Five Weeks New York, Jan, 12 (AP)--Anna Mayer, 21, was hiccoughing at one- second intervals during the week- end after five weeks of constant hiccoughing. About two years ago, she underwent an operation--cut- ting of the phrenic nerve--after three months of incessant hic- coughing, and recovered for a time, with only -occasional mild attacks. The gir] cannot eat normally or sleep without heavy sedatives which stop the hiccoughing only for a few hours at a time. Doctors believe the hiccoughing may be the result of one of several other oper- ations she has undergone, includ- ing an appendectomy and two op- erations performed after she swal- lowed foreign articles. THE ANCIENTS If a person would understand either the Odssey or any other ancient work, he must never ldok at the dead without seeing the living in them, nor at the living without thinking of the dead. We are too fond of seeing the ancients ag one thing and the moderns as another.(From "The Note-books of Samuel Butler.") Unless it is the dusty bitter. sweet, no decorations seem so flat as Christmas greens when the holiday is over. The vases on the mantelpiec2, in the hall or dining room call for a complte change of picture, For the bleak months, foliage can bear the burden, ac- cented at times with a few flow- ers, ocr To/#gnirf Colds When a formula eases and relieves five distressing cold symptoms at the same time, you can bet on its ability to bring quick, sure relief to "your cold. We have been using a thin starch made from all purpose flour. Mix 4 tablespoons -of flour with 6 tablespoons cold water. Then add boiling water until the starch is clear. Cook for 3 minutes and, if you want to be perfectly sure of no sticking, add a teaspoonful of butter to the hot starch. LE BE It's Love, Love, Love: "What is the logical age for Canadian girls to marry? At what age are mar- riages most apt to succeed?" The logical time to marry is when you fall head over heels in love; when the lad has enough money to reasonably support you. At what age do marriages succeed? Actually the records show that when the girl is nudging 26 and the lad, 30, those marriages are least likely to break up. Marriage needs love and tolerance and a sense of humor and the ability to count ten and still say nothing . except, "Really Darling--" LE BE Hang Nails: "All winter I'm plagued with hang nails. They're irritating and unsightly. How shall I cure them?" Keep a bottle of hand lotion beside the sink and rub it into your cuticle as soon as you finish dishwashing. Winsum, the famous Tamblyn hand lotion, has a heal- thy lanolin base. Cocoa butter, warmed and rubbed into the cuti- cle, is also healing and hangnail curing.
