Her mind searched fran- tically, seeking some solace for her pride. She had always loved Steve Wilson and had started writing to | him when Kate was too busy with her other boy friends to bother. Gradually the tone of his letters had changed and she thought he was seeing her as someone sweet and desirable instead of just Kate's young sister. Then when he announced he' was coming home to take over the management of his father's business, Kate's interest had re- vived, but Rose-Ellen remained | | confident she was the one he now cared for. But why, oh why, did she have to be so impulsive and greet him as she had--certain'y he had re- sponded. But later she had heard him say--'"Kate, you have no idea how happy you make me." She stamped her foot in helpless fury. Running out to her car as she "had and driving wildlv through town wasn't helping any. She would have to return to witness his happiness and Kate's triumph. She was approaching the city's outskirts, when as she stopped for a red light the door on her side of the car opened. a hard round abject pressed against her side, a voice grated. "Move over, sistor--fast!" Rose-Ellen opened her mouth but a vicious jab turned the in- tended scream into an agonized gasp. "Keep quiet, sister, and you won't get hurt. One peep--" An- other jab completed the sentence. Rose-Ellen had always pictured bandits, if she thought of them at all, as weazel-faced or beetling- orowed, flashily dressed. This one looked like an ordinary citi- zen--clean shaven, wearing a nlain dark suit. Then he looked at her and she shuddered. His slack eyes were expressionless. But as they ran over her. sliding 'rom frightened blue eyes to soft white throat, down to slim ankles, a gleam came into them. "Say, you're a slick chick," he approved. "Guess I'll take you along with me. You've got class." "Who are you," she guavered. "Why did you get in my car?" "Now, don't tell me you're beau- tiful but dumb," he mocked. Rose-Ellen felt the bandit's tense body relax as the trooper handed back her license, then tense again as instead of the ex- pected ticket, a revolver appeared in his hand. She gave a gasp of relief, then heard the trooper's shout as something struck her side and darkness descended. A happy Rose Ellen held court the next cay with Steve, her par- ents and Kate her admiring audi- ence. "Thank goodness the bullet just grazed your side," her mother ar- ranged the pillows more comfort- ably, "ard it is high enough that it won't prevent your wearing a bathing suit. "Tell us, Rose-Ellen," Kate asked curiously, "How did you tip that trooper off?" Rose-Ellen laid her cheek against Steve's hand. Widely Expanded Trade Between Canada, France To Follow New Agreement Ottawa, Jan. 16 -- (CP) -- Two- way trade between Canada and France appeared due for a boost today in the wake of a joint move to stimulate transactions between the two countries. Canada's action was to lift the lid partially on credits for private purchases from France, At the same time, French repre- sentatives here announced France hoped to be able to sell between $15,000,000 and $30,000,000 worth of goods to the country annually, com- pared with the pre-war $6,000,000. The easing of the Canadian cred- its, under a new Canadian-French agreement, will permit" France to use part of the unexpended balance of her $242,500,000 loan from Can- ada in private purchases. Previously, only the French government or its agencies could buy under the credit. About $16,000,000 or $17,000,000 will be available for private buyers during 1947 under this arrangement, French. trade representatives here sald if a simultaneous announce- ment-with the trade department on the new arrangement. For next year, the French spokes- man said, they hoped to be able to negotiate an enlargement of the present credit that has enabled them to buy goods worth $362,000,000 in Canada under the arrangement by which they get 70 per cent on credit and pay the rest in cash. They could not say what size loan they hoped to obtain. ' Under the existing contract, the French have ordered $90,000,000 in agricultural products--$73,000,000 of this in wheat -- $62,500,000 in in- dustrial supplies and $167,000,000 in industrial equipment, the last item including $62,000,000 for 200,000 tons of ship tonnage and $35,000,000 for 5,000 railway freight cars and 140 locomctives. Private purchases, it was indicat- ed, would run to such commodities as ncn-ferrous metals, asbestos, synthetic rubber, machine tools and a list of between 250 and 300 other items, restricted in certain direc- tions. Some materials -- including steel, lumber and wheat -- could still be imported only by the French gove.nment, along with equipment needed for public services or nation- alized organizations. Other materials could be bought under the credits only through im- port groups representing bodies of industries or importers. These in- cluded nickel, paper wood pulp, as- bestos, silver, pharmaceutical sup=- plies and some kinds of wool. PAGING JUNIOR!
