For a long time he did not move. He just sat on the log, playing the line for the trout; and Aifiing against his will of days that ha been, He had had a great time of it, nevertheless; but he had lost the one thing that would have made life worthwhile, Elissa. He had dared to think, the last few times | he had seen her, that she really did care for him; but h had been B | mistaken, It was Carley Evans she ad cared for, and it was Carley she had married. Elissa had said to Jim, "You're a nice boy, and I do like you but t can' of you as my Elissa, you sald you loved | me to "Enough, Jim." He had talked no more that evening. He opened an- other bag and with much more care and solicitude he deposited into this second bag his fishing tackle, the trout flies which he fondled lovingly. There was cruel- ty in this -- leaving a perfectly ~ood trout stream -- brimming with perfectly good delicious trout, just because a mere slip of a girl cared for a man -- a man whom she had JEchatly known and loved long before he, Jim, had come on the scen "But I'm dashing away," he. muttered. He grabbed the bags, hurried out of the cabin toward his wait- ing automobile. N» time to lose. No time at all, for that girl was coming toward him right now and at her side was that man, with his arm about her waist--Sweetmint, indeed! The girl was very near and she smiled Up into her escort's face -- lucky fool of a man! Then she said, airily, "I want you two to know each other, You'll like Sweetmint." Jim looked at Sweetmint and saw he was gray at the temples, His face was wreathed in a patient le -- and Jim was quite a stranger to patience. "I suppose we'll have to do as the brat wishes.
