Veterans Back In Church Pews * Ottawa -- (CP) -- Veterans and their families are returning to church life and duties "surprisingly well," a survey of leading Protestant churchmen in the capital indicated. Rt. Rev, Robert Jefferson, Angli- can Bishop of Ottawa, said he was "very pleased with the way our men have returned from the war and taken up their church duties where they left off." "I have found veterans exactly the same as other people," he add- ed, "and the fact they put on a uni- form made no difference in them." Rev. Stuart Ivison, minister of a Baptist church here and himself a veteran, sald his church had had "a "In my experience any approach which is made to them is always greeted with the utmost cordiality and, to a degree, success." Rev, Robert Good, Presbyterian minister, said more veterans were returning to the church after the Second World War than after the first and the response of war brides was particularly encouraging. Churchmen generally agreed there was no need for discourage- ment over the post-war religious situation. Some blamed housing difficulties as the reason many vet- erans and their families had not joined. This was chiefly because they had to move about from par- ish to parish in temporary homes. Once settled, the ministers said, many wil] affiliate themselves with a neighborhood church, Missionary Head Flies to Orient Toronto--(CP) -- Canadian mis- India and in wartorn Honan prove ince, China, will 'be visited by Rev. Leonard A. Dixon, general secretary, Missionary Society of the Church of England in Canada, who recently left for London by plane. Accompanied by Rev. Heber Wil- kinson, secretary-treasurer of the church's Indian mission, Canon Dixon will meet with other mission leaders at Palampur, Kangra dis- trict of Punjab, to discuss policies of church work in relation to the present Indian political situation. During their stay in Kangra, they will inspect the. church mis- sion which serves upwards of 1,000,- 000 people. Nestling in the sha- dows of the Himalayas, the mission is in charge of Rev. Geoffrey Gui- ton, formerly of Montreal, Mr. Guiton, formerly of Montreal. Mr. Guiton first went to India 14 years ago. The mission includes a boys' school attended by 650 pupils, and two girls' schools, three hospitals at which 11,000 patients were treated in 1945, and a nearby leper home. Van work among the rural com- munities in the area is a feature of the mission's medical activities. M. S.C.C. headquarters here report that Indian disturbances to date have caused virtually no interrup- ot on, On leaving India month, Canon Dixon Shanghai to later spend CE weeks at the Anglicdn mission in Honan. #12 Unions Claim Stelco Is Theirs Hamilton, Feb. 3--(CP)--The Ine dependent Steelworkers' Associa~ tion (Hamilton Works) has applied for certification ag the official bar- gaining agency at the big Hamilton Works of the Steel Company of Canada, it has been announced.
