HEALTH HAZARDS As Canada's population gravitates to towns and cities, such health hazards as noise, smoke, odors, dust and other evils of congestion in- crease. Public: health engineering forces seek to control such dangers by studying their causes and pre- vention, The Dominion is particu- larly concerned in ensuing safety of water for human use, adequate and efficient disposal of wastes and, among other matters, sanitary con- ditions for water, ice and foods aboard trains, ships and planes en- gaged in interprovincial and inter- national passénger service. Fencibles, That Is, Not Fenceposts Ottawa, Feb. 10 --(CP)-- Before military historians start tearing their hair, it should be reportea that it was the press and not Maj.- Gen. G. R. Pearkes (PC-Nanaimo) who called out the "fenceposts" Thursday, Gen. Pearkes, in a Commons speech, contended Canada's defence plans were about on a par with "a system calling for the annual mus- ter of rangers and fencibles such as we had 100 years ago." Not up on their military lore, some reporters caught his "fenc- ibles" as *"fenceposts" and called them out instead. For the record, the term fencibles was familiar in early Canadian his- tory as indicating a regiment of in- fantry liable only for home defence. History fails to divulge a single in- stance of a fencepost being sum- moned to arms, Use Television T In Steel Study Moscow, Feb. 10-- (Reuters) -- Television is being used in Soviet industry to study the process of smelting pig iron and steel in blast and open hearth furnaces, it is re- ported here. PAULINE DELINE Correspondent Newcastle, Feb. 6.--The New- castle Horticultural Society held a banquet last Thursday in the base- ment of the Community Hall Around eighty members and guests were present to enjoy a delicious chicken dinner, catered to by J. Taylor, "Elmhurst Hotel". Prior fo. the serving of the meal Rev. W. W. Patterson led in a word of prayer. Immediately following the meal, W. F. Rickard introduced the guest Pesker of the evening, the Hon. R. 8. Duncan, Assistant Deputy, Minister of Agriculture. Mr. Duncan stressed how important it is to family and Community life to have neat, clean and picturesque sur- roundings. The Society and guests present gleaned many beneficial points from the speaker and were sorry he had to shorten his address in order to catch the bus. J. 8S. H. Jose on behalf of .those present moved a vote of thanks ot Mr. Dun- can for delivering such an inspiring speech. This was followed by a hearty applause. * hearty applause. Mrs. C. Cowan voiced a brief word of welcome. Reeve George Walton also spoke briefly. Newcastle The Neat A toast to "Newcastle the neat" was proposed by R. 8. Graham, who told of how the neatness of New- castle had attracted him and Mrs. Graham when they were driving through some years ago, and had decided for them to settle here. Dr. J. A. Butler responded, and told a humorous tale of how twenty years or s0 ago it was common to see cows on the streets of the Village. Pictures of the land at the top of the west hill coming into Newcastle were then shown to give the aud- ience an idea of what the Society were and are endeavouring to do with the land. This plan would cers tainly tend to help make Newcastle a more attractive Village. A lively sing-song was then lend by Reeve Geo. Walton with Mrs, C. Cowan at the plano. C. R. Carwith Newcastle Horticulturists Hear Agriculture Official followed this up by showing two films, One on thelr tip to the Peace River district, the ier gladiolus grown by Dr. Sissen of Bowman- ville. The banquet closed with the singing of "God Save The King". The Executive of the Horticultur- al Society: Honorary President: Dr. J. A. Butler, W. F. Rickards, Mrs. P. Hare, J. H. Jose, R. 8. Graham. 'Ape-Boy' Starts His New Life Grand Rapids, Mich, Feb. 10-- (AP)--David Ruge, once called the "ape-boy", has turned his new face toward a new life. The 17-year-old Chicago boy, his formerly ugly deatures remodelled by a Grand Rapids plastic gd will head home today, with blight of his i Ye crime behind him. These schools are being conducted by General Electric for the pur- pose of acquainting the trade generally with the proper servicing of present day fluorescent lighting equipment and to acquaint them with new developments in this field.
