He em joyed this partieular dream immensely because during his waking hours the outcome was reversed. When his mother called him for breakfast, he shuddered as he opened his eyes. He realizeu tinal the Night | f a new day chai- lenged him. Life at school was Arksome for him, anc the thought of Jack Cooley oppressed him. Jack seemed to take Jride in mak- ing Denny the laughing stock at As Denny knotted his tie, he wished hard that he could be the one to Jaugh for a change: Denny, at the breakfast table, drained a glass of orange juice. He pushed back his chair and walked to the Joinigerator and opened the door. ked at the slice of beefsteak that his mother saved in case Jack Cooley decided to black- en one of his eyes again, "Mom," said Denny, "one of these days I'm -oing to eat a steak!" "It will give me to fry it, too," said Mrs. Harper. Denny's mother was keenly aware of his daily struggle at school. She realized that Denny had been one of the most popular students at school before Jack Cooley's arrival Mrs, Harper was wise enough not to pity Denny openly. "Don't you want to finish yow breakfast?" she asked. "I'm not hungry this morning, Mom." As Denny walked the five blocks to school, he concentrated deeply on his absorbing problem. He asked himself countless questions relative to his fears, but vainly he racked his mind for suitable enswers. But when he thought oi the dream he had had last night. he immediately braced himself. It was a wonderfial dream, thougnt Denny, and, gosk, the way I bat- tered Jack! The dream occupied his mind until he reached the en- trance of the high school. Jimmy White, practically only friend D2nny had left, w a hand at him. "Hi!" said Jimmy. "Hi!" said Denny, | "Say, Jack Coolc;'s been looking for you.' "Why?" Gosh, Denny, 1 wish you would show him up for a change. Prac- the whole student body wishes the same thing. Honest, Denny, [ really b:lieve you could said 'Jimmy. "When you see Jack tell him I'm going to give him the beating of | his life"! said Denny, stunned at his own words. x "You mean it, Denny"? "Sure." "Yipree"! "Tell him to meet me at the lot behind the candy store." | "T sure will. Denny! Yippee!" The word spread like PF ildfire, | and the whole studefit body looked forward to.the fight. When the last bell rang, they poured out of school and headed for the empty lot in droves. The students formed a circle and waited impatiently for Jack and Denny. Denny threw his books on the dusty ground and waited for Jack t peel his sweater, Jack lunged Denny before the sweater 3 a the ground and thus caught him unawares, Jack smashed a fist into Denny's face at the side of his mouth. Denny reeled and fell in a heap on the ground and dust began to fly. The students booed Jack for his sneaky punch. "Get up and whip him, Denny!" These were Jane's words and: they throbbed in Denny's head. This is the only chance IT will ever have to regain my self-respect, thought Denny.
