Alexander Graham Bell (lived 1847-1922), scientist, is celebrated as the inventor of the first successful telephone. Everyone realized the importance of this instrument, but only the business man, who may wonder how business was ever carried on in the days before the telephone, appreciates what a miracle-worker its inventor really was. Bell's first telephone was patented in 1876 and was exhibited at the Centennial Expo- sition. It's possibilities were evident, but it was far from being 4 fy . a perfect instrument. The inventor never ceased his experi- ments on it, and by successive improvements brought it to such a point that in January, 1915, conversation was easily carried on Between New York and San Francisco. The Bell Telephone Company has since that time carried on and expanded the telephone business, and it is stated on good authority that a thousand million conversations are held over the Bell telephones of the United States and Canada annually. His inventions, besides that for which he is chiefly noted, include the photophone, in which sounds are conveyed by a vibratory beam of light; the grapho- phone, the forerunner of the phonograph > and the tele- phone probe, which detects bullets in the human body. As a result of Alexander Graham Bell's contribution to humanity and science we are privileged today to enjoy the benefits of the telephone in every phase of life, Alexander Graham Bell was born in Edinburgh, Seot- land, received his education there and in London, and in 1870 moved to Canada with his father, who was the inventor of the "visible speech" method of teaching deaf mutes to talk. In 1872 the younger Bell became profes- sor of vocal physiology at Boston University, and there introduced his father's system. Even after his inven- tions demanded most of his time, he never lost interest in the education of the deaf, and wrote various works which entitled him to rank as an authority on that subject.
