WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 1947 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE NINE New Edifice Is Splendid Addition To Oshawa's Churches Building Commitee of Christ Memorial Church Have Given Faithful Service The building committee of Christ Memorial Church was elected by the annual vestry of the church in Jan- uary 1945 to construct a suitable su- perstructure on the existing base ment. The structure was also to in- clude a memorial tower in which to be inscribed the names of the men and women of the Parish who had served in World War II and those who had laid down their lives in that conflict. The need for the construction was very great, the church basement was badly over-crowded, with many organizations meeting every night in the week. There wag no complete church building in all the north end of Oshawa. The original committee ccnsisted of the late Rev. J. H. Oolclough as Rector REV. H. D. CLEVERDON Rector of Christ Memorial Church Honourary Chairman, A, 8. Evans, Chairman, Church Wardens J. E. Long and W. G. Corben, W. R. Sin. gleton, Treasurer, Mrs. Mildred Roberts, Secretary, Mr. F. Wetmore in charge of architecture, as cam- friends detailing the needs of the Parish for increased facilities and suggesting means of donating by in- stallments, s, donations - of Victory Bonds, etc. The Times Ga- zette was very kind in giving the work of the commitee and the needs of the church very good coverage. As a result, when the men ofthe parish went forth to canvass, the work was greatly facilitated and was quite successful. This was essential because under the rules of the Syn- od of Toronto 50% of the required building cost must be available be- fore bul can be commenced. As a result the committee report- ed to the annual vestry of January 1946, that construction in the spring would be possible if the required ap- provals were obtained. These were secured, and with the appointment of the present incumbent Rev. H. D. Cleverdon, the construction project was signed with Mr. R. B. Wilkins ts general contractor in April. Since construction started, the committee has been very active locating sour- ces of supply and performing much manual labour on a voluntary basis. Committee members have made many contacts with material sour- ces at Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, Orillia and many other points ex- pediting the many scarce materials required in church construction. Faced with an increase in build- ing costs the committee again suc- cessfully appealed and canvassed the parish in December 1946. In or- der to carry out this canvass with the greatest facility, the committee added two new members ag assist- ant treasurers. Mrs. F. G. Knowler was in charge of accounts re- ed in charge of accounts payable, The work of the committee has been greatly aided by the church organizations. The Sunday School with Mr. Stan Gales as superinten- dent added to their earlier sale of "shingles" by the Sunday School children a final "sale of bricks" so that their total donations exceeded $1500. The Men's Service Club with Frank Brown as President has per- formed several thousands of hours of voluntary work, canvassing, car- pentry, grading, roofing and finally refinishing and installing church furniture. The Women's Auxiliary under the presidency .of Mrs, J. Broadbent made a majer financial donation and have installed a love- ly memorial window in the chapel. 'The Ladies Evening Guild with Mrs. Stan Gales as President donated Choir pews, frontals and chancel carpet and made a substantial cash donation. The Ladies Afternoon Guild under the leadership of Mrs. G. Summers made a considerable grant as well as donating chancel prayer desks. placed | ceivable, Miss K.
