WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, 1947 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE ELEVEN pening Of Christ Church Will Be History Making Event President Of Oshawa Ministerial Association Extends Good Wishes "We think of all those who through the years have prayed and planned and laboured that some day their efforts might be crowned in this ornate House of the Lord." ... REV. J. V. McNEELY, M.A, B.D. REV. J. V. McNEELY, M.A, BD. President Oshawa Ministerial Asso- clation and pastor of King Street United Church, who forwarded a message of goodwill fo the members of Christ Memorial Church. Christ Memorial Church, Brethren in Christ: It is with feelings of profound gratitude to Almighty God, that I write this word of congratulation to ou on the completion of your autiful new church edifice. Truly it is a'temple of the Lord. At last a long anticipated dream has been realized and we rejoice: with you in the satisfaction that is yours in its visible fulfilment. We think of all those who through the years have prayed and planned and laboured that some day their eff might be crowned in this ornate Housz of the Lord. Josiah Royce in his Volumes on The World and the Individual, in speaking of the church defined it as a "community of memory and hope." Certainly a church is fra- grant with the memory of those who have sanctified its portals, ves- try and chancel. But what of to- morrow? Surely the church must ever be the church, dispensing the Light, the Truth and the Love of God to all those who worship. that its influence may permeate our common life with the Spirit of Christ and His emphasis upon the Word and the Sacraments. Rev. J. V. McNeely, Neighbours Eye Open Spaces Canberra, March 12.--(CP)--Aus- tralia is becoming more and more conscious of the need to fill up the country's empty spaces or wait for the day that overcrowded Asiatic neighbors ask why they should not be admitted to undeveloped areas. Australia today is estimated to have 7,500,000 people on her contin- ent of 3,000,000 square miles. The bulk of the population is in an east- ern coastal belt, but though the whole counrty average density of population is only 25 persons per square mile. This compares with 3.2 per square mile in Canada. The figure is in sharp contrast with Asia's average density of popu- lation of 155 persons per square mile and that of Australia's near- est neighbors, the Indonesians who average 90 per square mile, with 820 Indonesians per square mile in Java. The situation of Australia as the only white nation in her part of the world and with her wealth of living space compared with that of her northwestern neighbors may be- come the most important factor in Australian foreign policy. Warn- ings of its importance have already been made and are reflected in pol- icy statements by government spokesmen, Bearing on the situation also is the fact that Australia's neighbors moving steadily toward political self-determination and getting rid of European influences in their government in many cases carry re- sentment against the "whites" who have governed them. Part of Australia's job will be to see that any such resentment is not taken out on this country. A source The Rector, Wardens and Members, Facing the Chancel in Christ Memorial Church Interior view of Christ Memorial Church, which will be opened officially tomorrow night. This illustration suggests the attractive interior decor- ative effect, combining the traditional Gothic in the richly-colored overhead rafters -- not seen in the picture -- with light wall areas that give a mellow brightness. Lending a distinctive color note are the three large chancel stained glass windows. To the left may be seen the attrac- tively carved pulpit, balanced on the right by the lectern. Near the pulpit a doorway gives access to the vestry, while to the right of the chancel is the proposed Memorial Room which will be illuminated with a memori- al window and wall plaque commemorating the great war services of Christ Church parishioners. Converging lights illuminate the cross on the Holy Table, shown in the centre background. of annoyance has been the "White Australia" immigration policy, to Apstralians ga safeguard against lowering of standard by native la- bor, but to some of the people of Asia a racial barrier. Immigration Minister Calwell, who plans to bring in 35,- 000 white immigrants in 1947 and 70,000 a year subsequently, told an Australian Day gathering that un- less the population is increased by immigaticn and improved birth- rate Asiatic peoples would be able to "take over" the country within two generations. He advised Australians to forge! | racial and religious prejudices so that the country could build its pe- pulation to 20,000,000.
