WEDNISDAY, APRIL 2, 1947 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE SEVEN Chilcren's Village Set Up For Orphans The village of Hadjduhadhaza in Easten Hungary has a 13-year-old mayo. Its youngest citizens are fix sears old; the town elders are 18. idjduhadhaza 1s the first of mary of "Children's villages" by mens of which the government of Hingary hopes to solve its tremen- war orphan problem. The Unitarian Service Committee, which is helping to supply the vil- Bge with food, calls Hadjduhadha- ga "the first step toward a more enlightened treatment of war orph- ans." The committee found this village a sharp contrast to Europe's post- war picture of "abandoned child- ren living on the streets by begging, stealing and scavenging." Ex-Army Camp The village of 200 children *was priginally the site of an army camp. Its buildings include four dormitories, a school house, a car- penter's shop, a cobbler's shop and a blacksmith's shop. It is not an orphanage in any traditional sense, but a community of children, In the cobbler's shop, five boys, apprenticed to an old cobbler were trying to add a few more kilometers to some impossible looking shoes. Two of the older girls were working at sewing machines, repairing old clothing and performing miracles with rags. In the blacksmiths shop, a dozen men were sweating away, making beds for the children yet to arrive in the village. But the social organization is hat makes Hadjduhadhaza a real ommunity. By secret ballot the children elect their mayor, the pol- | ice officers, the judges, the post- master and the néwspaper editor. At a record court trial, a young lad was accused of having destroy- ed some dishes while scuffling with a neighbor at the supper table. The judges, as well as the accused took the matter in all seriousness. There was no suggestion that this was just a game that they were play- ing. The defendant explained that he had been struck by his neigh- bor, and was striking back. He did not intend, he said, to destroy com- munity property. Sentence: KP The judges deliberated and then scalled the defendant for sentenc- ing, He was given 7 days at hard labor, carrying water from the pump to the kitchen, The boy ap- pealed because he had to go to go "® Toilet Soap ..... 60c to school and also work in the shop. The judges gave him permission to arrange with the kitchen staff to serve his punishment early in the morning and in the evening. That night the village choral group gave a concert for visitors from the Unitarian Service Com- mittee. Thirty boys and girls stood together at the end of the hall. Two jeltder boys held lighted lamps near- by, and the whole village was quiet- ly gathered about, sitting on the beds, leaning against the wall. After a concert of Hungarian 'olk songs and hymns, the group @ng in English "John Brown's Body" and "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean." Then a 33 yout old boy stepped , & made a speech of tanks to the Americans. He was tie mayor of Hadjduhadhaza. Citizenship Course Windsorite's Idea Windsor -- (CP) -- When 50 Eiropean-born men and women wire "graduated" last week from a 20-week night school course in citizenship, Mrs, G. L, Hamilton, of "Windsor, might well have stepped forward to take a well- earned bow. They were the latest of 150 Windsor residents to complete language, geography and na- tional affairs studies in prepara- tion for Canadian citizenship.' And the first class, organized in January, 1945 was Mrs, Hamil- ton's idea. A nurse in the United States consulate here, she met numerous immigrants and n.wly-naturaliz- ed Canadians to whom the Eng- lish language and the "meaning" of Canada were mysteries. On her own initiative, she inaugur- ted the citizenship classes. The 1.0.D.E. sponsored them. : Impressive results of the in- truction led to a spread of the dea to other parts of the prov- jace. And early this year, with he passing of the Canadian Citi- zenship Bill, the sponsorship was ransferred to local boards of education throughout Ontario. Mrs, Hamilton, who continues 0 supervise the classes here, does not pretend they are the omplete answer to citizenship. - "You cannot expect to give Rem eight years of schooling in 0 weeks, but we do attempt to ive the potential citizens the mportant facts about this coun- ry and to inspire them to be- ome loyal citizens," she said. peven of last night's 50 graduates ppeared before Essex County udge Albert J, Gordon to make ftizenship applications. On advice, T used a sulphur -oint- ment. The ringworm's gane, but so is the hair. When will it grow in again?" If the hair loss is caused by the sulphur, hair will begin to grow within 16 weeks. If the boys are highly nervous, the hair will not grow until the nervous condition is better. Auto Knitter: "Where can I get needles for my auto knitter? It's as good as new if I could get needles." Duchess of Windsor: "To what re- ligious denomination did the mini- ster belong who married the Duke and Duchess of Windsor? What grounds for divorce are permitted in Canada?" The Reverend Robert Anderson Jardine, Church of England. clergy- man at Darlington and te Vicar of St. Paul's in that north of England town, performed the marriage cere- meny for the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. d The only grounds for divorce in Canada is adultery. Both legal lights and humanitarians are trying to widen the grounds to include insanity and desertion, Shower: "Would it be correct to give a granddaughter . wedding shower?" What could be more fitting or beautiful than a shower for your granddaughter. I'd love to come. Persecution Complex: "Every time 1 go into a room, I feel as if people were talking about me; no one ever drops into our house or comes with- out an invitation, What's the matter with me?" You think too much about your- self. Everybody talks about every- one else, but if you are friendly and kindly, the talk will be sympathetic and generous. Don't wait for the neighbors to drop in; you drop in on them with a little gift in your hand, a jar of jam, a plate of hot biscuits. Give friendship and you'll get it back doubled. Double Rings: "Do you think a double ring ceremony keeps a mar- ried man more faithful? Why do unmarried girls run after married men?" If a man has a roving foot, it will take more than a. double ring to keep him constant. The girls cer- tainly run after married men, but it's the wife's business to keep her husband so busy and interested, he'll never notice. Newscaster: "Which radio news- caster is the best?"
