Davidson ENDORSES "PAINT UP AND CLEAN UP" CAMPAIGN Many of the citizens of Whitby are aware that at present a paint-up, clean-up campaign is in progress in the town under the sponsorship of the Whitby Town Council. However, many citizens are not yet aware of this fact. It is to this latter group that I address the following remarks. Believing that clean and freshly-painted prem- Ises are one of the greatest assets any community can boast of, the Whitby Town Council, together with the Whitby Chamber of Commerce and Whitby Planning Board, have decided to organize a campaign directed lly at the busi district of Whitby, but taking in the residential and industrial sections also for the purpose of urging our citizens to enter wholeheartedly into a drive to clean-up and paint-up Whitby. There are many buildings and areas in Whitby that are badly in need of a fresh coat of paint or a good orgapized cleaning and it is the hope of my office that they will be attended to during this drive, Let it be understood by one and all that it is not only for appearance sake that we have under- taken this campaign. It has been brought to my attention that in areas immediately adjacent to the business section and also to residential terri- tories there are large, unsightly and unhealthy of r ish and garbage of oné¢ kind and another. This is a condition that citizens should not and will not tolerate. Board of Health officials, together with the local sanitary inspector, have condemned the practice of pitching rubbish and garbage into unsightly piles in laneways and other somewhat secluded areas claiming, and correctly, that they present a hazard to the welfare and health of our citizens. Join In The Spiri The citizens are not being requested to dispose of the refuse which has collected during the winter months but are asked only to co-operate with town workmen by placi the r in iners at the curb where they can be collected by the extra staft ot men and trucks which have been designated for this purpose. Areas in the town have been foned off and a systematic collection is being made throughout these areas. It is indeed amazing how a coat of paint or a good scrubbing with soap and water will improve the app of the wood k on a building, any building. The various local . organizations and official bodies which have lent their support to this campaign, are at p urging mer s, busi men and citizens to spend a nominal amount of money on improving the appearance of their prop- erty by this simple expedient. It not only benefits the town collectively but also you as individual citizens. Campaigns such as this are not new. Many other centres across Canada are either in the midst of such a campaign or are organizing one. Reports from many of these muncipalities indicate that previous campaigns have been very successful and have been very gratifying to municipal officials. There is no reason whatsoever why the local cam- paign cannot be a success. All it will take is a little co-operation from the citizens, all of whom can rest assured that the local council will be gratified and pleased if the campaign is the success that we know it can be. I urge ali citizens of Whitby to get behind this drive and to take to task any and all who do not do so. Help make Whitby a more attractive and healthful town in the eyes of not only visitors, but also our citizens, it of The Drive and "PRINT-UP" AND "CLEAN-UP" W. Davidson MAYOR MOORHOUSE BROS.
