PAGE TEN THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE By PORT NAPSHOTS Big local sports attraction this evening is the Beaches Major Fast- ball League schedule game up at Alexandra Park when Pete Glen and Irv. Koffman bring their league-leading Peoples Credit Jewellers to Oshawa to do battle with the GM-Colts at seven o'clock, in front of the grandstand, Peoples moved out in front in the Beaches League race with their 2-0 win over Bowles Lunch on Wednesday night and Tip Top and Bowles, now tied for second.place, will settle that position, temporarily, when they clash tonight at Kew Beach. It begins to look very much as if the GM-Colts could take a fall out of the Peoples' clan. providing they can stop Herb. Stricker, league-leading hitter and classy outfielder of the Peoples club. Stricker has practically defeated the Colts single-handed in the last three meetings of these two teams, with his potent hitting. Gordie "Junior" Wright may get the call tonight against the Oshawa - team, since McGowan pitched on Wednesday for Peoples. * * L J Playing the brand of ball they served up on Wednesday night in Toronto, GM-Colts can win this one tonight. They not only played errorless ball against Tip Tops but pulled off several plays in the brilliant class. Whether or not Johnny Kitchen will be. ready for tonight's game will not be known until game-time but it is hoped he will be ready, for his timely hitting is an important factor in the Colts' attack. "Lefty" Meulemeester or Dean McLaughlin will get the call tonight against Peoples. In their last three games the Oshawa club has received top-notch pitching from each of their three hurlers and if the slabmen can coutinue to serve up that brand of pitching, the fans are assured of a bang-up game, regardless of which way it goes. Following that no-hit classic in Toronto on Wednesday, it is expected that one of the bigger softball crowds of the season will be at Alexandra Park tonight at seven o'clock to see Peoples and GM-Colts tangle. Campbell LJ] * LJ] Oshawa baseball fans get a chance to see the Oshawa "Hunters" in action tomorrow evening when they meet Peterboro Kiwanis, here at Alexandra Park at six-thirty o'clock in a scheduled Lakeshore Junior League game, This game is not the only ball game on the calendar for tomorrow with the U.A.W.A. playing Frigidaires in an ex. game in the evening also and a cricket match at Lakeview Park being the other sports attraction. "Hunt Club" sponsors took their ball team to Toronto on Wednesday night to see the fine baseball show at Maple Leafe Stad- jum. Don't suppose any of the local youngsters will try those freak plays and circus catches, but they should be at least inspired to try for the "hard ones" and since they need a victory to keep pace with B'Nai B'Rith, Bowmanville and Cobourg in the hectic scramble for first place, we look to the "Hunters" to put up one of their best games tomorrow night and hand the young Petes another licking. Hunters will have to hustle too-- for several of their players are away on holidays. * LJ > Robson Leather and Skinners, two of the local Inter. "AA" teams at present battling it out for playoff position, are going to clean up a couple of their postponed games, which have been rained out in recent weeks, by playing a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon , and evening, over at Bathe Pork. Skinners and Tannery will play the first game at three o'clock tomorrow afternoon and then go back to Bathe Park north-east diamond on Saturday evening at 6.45 o'clock for a second game. + { \ LJ + It would take too long to say much about last night's different ball ce there were about a dozen played altogether. However, briefly, here is what happened. Legionnaires trounced North Oshawa 17-4 in the Inter. "AA" and Skinners nosed out Bolahoods 14-11 in the same group, with a 12-inning thriller. In the Junior softball, Aces whipped Brooklyn 13-6, Westmount pulled a 20-7 upset win in Whitby and Dunn's Tallors beat out Fittings 12-6. In the Minor Baseball games, Sunnysids Combines nipped Cay Lumber 5-4 in a thriller and Whitby and Rexalls played to a 2-2 tie, with McDonald and McTavish staging a great mound duel. Kiwanis Juveniles defeated Westmount Indians 20-2 in softball and the Inter. "A" game saw Legionnaires trounce Whitby 13-1. + LJ RA SPORT SHORTS--Robert (Lefty) Grove. one of the greatest south- paws of all time, entered the select circle of 300-game winners six years ago today as he pitched the Boston Red Sox to a 10-6 victory over the Cleveland Indians. Grove allowed 12 hits in the triumph which put him among baseball's immortals . . . Oshawa plays a return game with the Pete's lacrossers up in the Liftlock City this evening and it certainly would be nice for the boys to bring home a win . . . . Whitby plays Dunn's Tailors in a Junior Softball fixture at Bathe Park tonight and the outcome should be obvious to the followers of these teams although the Whitby team could pull a very suprising upset win . , . . Westmount and Reeds Florists play a game at Westmount and that is one that the Florists should have little trouble with . . . . Peterborough golfers are getting a big kick out of the proposed appearance of Turk Broda and Bill Ezinicki in the Ontario Golf district tourney to be staged up there . . «. Don't forget that our Ezzy is one of the hotest Canadian- Amateurs around right at this time ... . . Big blast trom Windsor is that a native of the town, one Gord Haidy is the, and we quote "best junior hockey prospect in Canada." Come, com¢q fellows . . . . The Buffalo Bisons of the American Hockey League are \experiencing a little difficulty in the management of the club. Seems their club vice-prexy got the gate, along with coach Frank Beisler. Reports state that a successor will be chosen from the ranks of the National Hockey League . . .. Dick Fowler another Toronto boy to make good in the big Leagues won his seventh victory for the Philadelphia Athletics when he allowed nine hits to the Indians and his team won 6-3 . . . . Elmer (the boss) Yoter, who very ably cap- tains the Maple Leafs of the International League, states that he expects his Leafs to reach the first division in time to catch a play-off berth . . . . He is starting to figure the way the hockey writers did when the N.H.L. Leafs hit that bad losing streak two years ago . . . . nothing but per- centages to prove that they could win and then they lost through not winning enough games. + * > * SCISSORED SPORT --(By The Canadian Press)-- The Ontario Golf Association announces that its team at the Interprovincial Tourna- ment, Royal Quebec Golf Club, Aug. 11, will consist of Rudy Horvath. Windsor; Phil Farley, Toronto Scarboro; G. G. (Sonny) Adams, Toronto Scarboro; and J. B. (Jack) Nash, of London. The match, which includes top-flight players from every province, is a 36-hole Medal play event and the trophy, the Willingdon Cup is emblematic of the Canadian Prov- incial Team championship. Windsor's Rudy Horvath is 1947 Ontario Amateur champion. Canadian Junior champion Gerry Kesselring of Kitchener will defend his title at the meet . . . . Joe Baksi, the Kulpmont, Pa., heavyweight boxer, who recently returned from a European tour, has arrived home, and says he is ready to meet Joe Louis, "any Louis is ready." Baksi was beaten by the Swedish Olle Tandberg in Stockholm two weeks ago and plans now are underway to match him with Tand- berg again in New York this summer, the winner to meet the Brown Bomber next match . . .. Yankee Valor, one of American turf's most promising three-year-olds and recent winner of the $50,000 Hollywood Derby, died at Inglewood, Calif., yesterday. Cause of the racehorse's death was given as acute hydro-gastritis . . . . Tom Brown of San Fran- cisco was eliminated from the singles division of the French International Tennis Championships at Paris Thursday by Josef Asboth of Hungary, who put the top-speeded American favorite down 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, in the semi-finals . . . . The winner of a bout tonight at Madison Square Garden between Ezzard Charles and Elmer (The Violent) Ray will have the doubtful privilege of meeting Joe Louis in November in a pon-title bout. It WH be hk non-title-bout because there are no logical contenders for the follor. Skating o TONIGHT = o SATURDAY AFTERNOON o SATURDAY NIGHT Oshawa Arena = SIX JR. TEAMS IN ACTION LAST NIGHT ACES TRUMP BROOKLIN IN JUNIOR TILT Oshawa Aces handed out a 13.6 drubbing to the Brooklin Dodgers, at Alexandra Park last night and now it is up to the ,Aces to win a lot of games in a row to make up for all those that were forfeited due to league difficulties. The Aces looked very good in the game and came through with some great hitting along with the excel- lent hurling of George Brabin to absolutely smother what efforts the Dodgers tried to put forth to make up for the need of runs on their side of the ledger. "Dem Bums" took a three run lead in the top of the second inning when they got two walks, an error, and a single off Brabin, Those plus a little base-running pushed the runs over the platter. Aces came 'back to nearly tie it in the last of the third when they scored two runs, on a single, a walk, and an error. Then came the deciding inning for the Aces. They blew in six runs in the last of the fourth to win the game right then and from there on the game was just a "shoo-in". They got those six runs on a double by Eric Pogue and five walks given up by Mitchell. Two more in the fifth and htree in the seventh put the game on ice for the Aces, with only a three run rally by the Dodgers in the top of the ninth to worry the Aces a little. The big hitters for the Aces were Pogue, with two doubles, and Blair with a "two-for-three" average. For the Dodgers, Jack Nesbitt and Mac- key were best at the plate. DUNN'S TAILORS DOUBLE SCORE OVER FITTINGS Dunn's Tailors doubled the score over Fittings, 12-6, when they tangled last night at Cowan's Park in a scheduled Junior League soft- ball fixture, Except for two bad innings, Tutak was complete master of the situa- tion. In the 5th, Fittings got to him for three runs when he went wild and issued five walks and only one hit. In the next inning, two more walks, a single by Ford and an error gave Fittings three more run sand concluded their scoring, incidentally. Welsh went very well on the mound for Fittings at the start but Scott singled and Taillon dou- bled for the first run for Dunn's, in the 3rd. They added two in the 4th on an error and Tutak's double. Three runs scored in the 5th as Dunn's started to really roll and they added two in the 7th and four in the 8th. Taillon, with three doubles, was his team's best at the plate with Tutak getting two doubles and a single. Corrigan, with two singles and Ford, were the only two dangerous batters for Fittings. DOUBLES WHIP ALBERT ST. King Street "Happy Doubles" defeated Albert Street Men's Club in an Inter-Church Softball League game, 10-2. . Three runs in the first inning would have been enough for the King St, team, Love singled, Per- ry was on with an error and Gomme walked and with one out, Dale was safe on an error and 3 etealte- and Bigwood both sing- ed. They added two in the 4th and one in the 6th then got three in the sixth on three hits and an er- ror and added their last in the 8th when Perry was safe on an outfield fumble and Gomme sin- gle. to score him, Albert Street got one in the first frame and then didn't score again until the 8th when an er- ror put Rundle on base, Slack walked and Higgs forced Rundle but Slack advanced and scored later on a wild pitch, for his team's second and only other run. Mosier pitched a great game for the winners but batted like pitchers are usually expected to do. Love, Gomme and Burrows hit well for the winners, KING ST. Tony Siblock was in great pitching form for the Hardy-Har- dies and in addition to allowing only five hits, he struck out se- ven Whitby batters in the ab- breviated 8-inning 'game which had to be called on account of darkness, An error, walks to Fletcher and a fielder's choice play and an- other error gave Whitby two of their runs in the third inning, In the 6th, ¥letcher wags safe on an error and then Gates and Hoar both hit safely and an outfield fly let Gates score after Fletcher to give Whitby two more runs, They had three runs across the plate in the last of the 8th on two errors, two walks, a hit by Hoar and the bases were loaded when Yuill fanned and the game was called at this stage, when it was too dark to continue, Hep-Cats went to Whitby to bring back a win and .they in- dicated this in the first inning when Hill and Harper connected and so did Mallette and Watson and Loscombe, for a 4-run rally in the opener, They added three in the 2nd on . ts by Hill, Keeler, Smith and Siblock, They were checked for a couple of frames and then broke out again with a 5-run splurge in the 5th, added five more in the next inning, two in the 7th and one in the 8th, for their 20.run total. Hoar was the big batter for Whitby with three hits while Hill, Harper, Smith, P, Siblock, Los- combe and T. Siblock all hit well for the winners. Harper had a homer in the 6th, with one mate on the pond at the time, WESTMOUNT: --Hill, cf; Har- per, 1b; Keeler, 2b; Smith, 3b; Mallette, ¢; Siblock, ss; Watson, If: Loscombe, rf; T. KIWANIS HORNETS WHIP WESTMOUNT Kiwanis Hornets had little trouble disposing of the Westmount In- dians in their Juvenile game played last night at Westmount, which ended in a 20-2 score. Masiewich on the mound for Kiwanis was simply too good for the Westmount team and he scat- tered 10 hits over the full distance and was never in serious trouble. Game singled in the first, advanced on a" sacrifice by Ferguson and scored on Wotton's single, In the 3rd inning Tamblyn walk- ed to open it up then Weeks and Game both singled to fill the bases. Ferguson forced Tamblyn at the plate and Wotton popped out to 2nd but Masiewich errored on Bowler's bid, allowing Weeks to score, * After that the Indians tried hard but couldn't get on the war- path again, : A single by Weeks and a double by Wotton with two out in the 5th was their closest bid after the 3rd, and Game and Ferguson both sin- gled in the 9th, but with two out. Ferguson, on the mound for the Indians, just didn't have it to stop the Hornets. Day and Baldwin hit triples. Baldwin had three hits and two walks in six tries and got on by an error the other time. Hurst had two hits, Thursby had two singles and two doubles, Day had a triple and a double. Hornets scored four runs .in the first inning on a single by Hurst, a walk to Baldwin, Coggins' triple and a single by Thursby, then Day's triple. In the 3rd they pushed seven runs across the plate and added three runs in the 4th, the same in the 6th and 8th frames. After that, Smegal singled and scored on a hit by Symkie. Skinners then re- tired Bolahoods in the 12th with- out a run despite two walks, when Bc'ahoods tried to get back into the running by stealing bas- es and were nipped for their trouble. : Skinners opened with 4 runs on a homer by Menaul and ano- ther by Symkie with two on bas- es, They looked to be well away but Farrow settled down and held Skinners off tl. score-sheet until the 5th inning when a walk and hits by Smegal, Bircham anc Big. low accounted for three more runs. Lone tallies in the 7th and 8th and two in th§ 9th kept Skin- ners out in front all the way-- but Bola hoods kicked in wi.a a 4.run rally in the last half of the 9th, to tie up the game, Bolahoods went along quietly and stecdily, with a run in the second on hits by Farrow, Noon- an and a fielder's choice play. In the 3rd, Claus doubled, White singled and another fielder's choice gave them two more runs. Two runs scored in the 5th and one in the 6th and another in the 8th, Going into the last half of the 9th, Bolahoods were trailing 11- 7. F.rrow opened with a walk and Taylor fanned. Elliott dou- bled and Pilkey tripled. Blake walked but was forced by Gavas and then Edmonds singled to score Gavas with the tying run and Claus grounded out with Ed- monds on 3rd, Neither team scored in the 10th and 11th innings, although both threatened, Smegal, Symkie and Menaul were best at the plate for Skin. ners with Edmonds and Elliott doing the big hitting for Bola- hoods, SKINNERS: Menaul, ¢; Liston, rf; Spencer, 2b; Smegal, ss; Bir- cham, If and cf; Symkie, If and p; Biglow, 3b; Smith, 1b; Robin- son, cf; Stone, rf; Falanes, rf; Sarls, cf and Kugh, ef, BOLAHOODS: Idmonds, ss; Claus c¢; White, 3b; Farrow, p; Noonan, rf; Elliott, 1b; Pilkey, If; Blake, cf; Gavas 2b and rf; Taylor, 2b, Wilf Lewis Hurls Legion AA to Win Over North Oshawa Behind a steady 6-hit pitching performance by Wilf. Lewis, Legion defeated North Oshawa 17-4 last night at Alexandra Park in an Inter. "AA" tussle, which had been previously rained out. A drive by Richards to open the 2nd following by an outfield error on Tureski's bid gave North Oshawa their first run. In the 6th, Taylor walked with one out, with two out Martin was safe on an error and Welsh singled to centre and when the outfielder muffed the parade was on. Tureski singled and Mul- lens was safe on an error before Crawford fanned to end the inning, after three runs had scored. That concluded North Oshawa's scoring success. Legion opened with three runs and added five in the second on a couple of walks, two errors and hits by Higgins, Dionne and Lott's double. An 8.run splurge in the fourth turned the game into a rout and Legion eased off after that, with only -one more run on a walk to Hobbs in the fifth frame, Waddell drew four walks for Legion while Cook, Higgins, Brown also with four walks, Lott also were to the fore with the stick. Mullens was the only North Oshawa batter to get more than one safe hit off Wilf. Lewis' effective hurling. NORTH OSHAWA ;. The Legion won the game on tremendous drives into left field that went almost always for home runs. Andy McMullen was the big hitter for the Legionnair with two homers in four official appearances at the plate. Three other players got four flagers in the game and that in itself was enough to win the game without having men on base, but there were men on base. A total of 10 of the Legion's runs were scored on these homers. Easy For McConkey Jack McConkey pitched great ball for the Legion but he really could have saved himself, for the enemy weren't hitting at all. Alf. Hiller came in to pitch the game for the Legion after the eighth inning, and Le didn't do so badly in his return to the game. Taffy Mayne was.the Whitby hurler who was tagged for all the homers, and since the Whitby team had so few replacements, they had to wait till the sixth inning before they could replace him. They then put the coach on third and placed Wally Sam- anski on the mound. Wally fared not so badly and the game might have had a dif- ferent ending if Wally had held down his wild streak. The Legion's big inning was the second when they banged out three homers and a triple to score seven runs. Seneco hit a four- bagger with one man on, McMul- 1z~ hit one with one on, and Ty- son hit a dandy with two mates aboard. Turner got the triple, but was left stranded when Mayne finally got things under control, Avoid Whitewash In the last of the fourth the Legionnaires rammed home an- other two .runs on. a walk, a sin. gl: and a two-base error to the shortstop. ' 'Brisbois and McMul- len were the men to score. In the 'top of the fifth the Whitby team came to life with some timely hitting and that scored their lone run of the ball gam-. Ed Samanski got to first on an error to the third baseman and then went to second on a single by Mayne. Both runners then stole .a base. Watson went dpwn swinging, but the next man up was Rousseau and he hit a little blooper into centre field that scored Samanski from third. Rousseau was tagged out at sec- ond when he tried to steal that base, x Legion had scored two runs ir the last half of the fourth and that made it 9-1 going into the sixth. In that frame the Legion g' four more runs on two hom- ers, one by McMullen, and an- other by Turner. The only dif- ference between the homers was 8 | that Turner had a man on base when he clouted his. That was all the scoring in the game and ended with both teams putting in relief hurlers.
