TUESDAY, JULY 29, 1947 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE ELEVEN Gorillas, Hippos' Weighty Problems Zoo Keepers Find Philadelphia -- (AP) -- The avoirdupois situation may seem strictly in miladys department, but Philadelphia Zoo officials say it's _an equally weighty problem in the animal world. Getting a 500-pound gorilla or a 30-year-old hippo on the scales is tougher than persuading a stout lady to weigh herself with her boy friend looking, says Fred, M. Patton, the zoo's service man- ager.. . But with the zoo highly Neight= conscious these days, i 3 gcales are constantly in use, and A and intricate means, zoo officials are' keeping an accurate check on such inmates as "Bamboo" and "Massa," the gorillas that have "begun to bear a marked resemb- lance to the fabulous "Mr, Five By-Five." "Bamboo"--at 21 is the oldest gorilla in captivity--Ilast weighed in at slightly over 450 pounds, with "Massa" tipping the beam at a bit less. Weighing such dangerous animals as "Bamboo" who recently mauled a caretaker, requires ingenuity. So officials devised a method of placing a scale outside the goril- 1a's cage and extending a bar into the cage. When the animal hangs on the bar, the scale automatic- PRESCRIPTIONS Quickly and Accurately Filled MITCHELL'S R.B. ABBOTT ® FOUNDATIONS ® SIDEWALKS AND ALL OTHER CEMENT WORK Phone 1640W ally records the weight, Elephants and hippos require even heavier equipment so the zoo uses the scale on which it weighs incoming coal and hay. Weighing snakes provides an- other headache for caretakers. Getting the squirming serpents on a scale is one thing: keeping them there is another, Large harmless snakes are considerably easier to weigh, says Charles McGurk, an employee, ' "You just pick 'em up, step on the scale, deduct you own weight from the total and difference is the serpent's poundage." = Dangerous species are placed in a bag and weighed alone on the scale, which may range from a kitchen type to a feed scale, depending on the variety of snake, Birds get in the weighing pro- gram, too, on scales varying from the postage type for baby owlets, sparrows and ot. 'r small species, up to larger scales for ostrichs and other heavy birds. Regardless of who they may be in the animal kingdom, every newcomer is weighed upon arriv- al, usually within the crate in which it is shipped. The weight of the crate is subtracted after the animal has been caged. The zoo first became weight conscious about a decade ago when Dr, Herbert L, Ratcliffe found, after a series of autopsies and studies, that m:]lnutrition fre- quently was the cduse of zoo an- imals' deaths, He then began an intensive study into malnutrition in anim- als--in which weight readnigs played an important part--and devised a series of well-balanced diets. Since then, says Dr. Roger Con- ant, curator of the zoo, there have been no deaths by improper feeding. TENTS, Tarpaulins REPAIRED... RENOVATED Also Manufactured!
