WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1947 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE Expect Variety Of Canned Goods There will be a good variety of canned fruits and vegetables on grocers' shelves this winter. De- spite a short crop of some kinds of fruits and vegetables, commercial canning companies will neverthe- less be able to keep the consumer happy. says F.'J. Perry, Chief ' Canning Inspector, Dominion De- partment of Agriculture. While emphasizing that much de- pends on a continuance of good growing weather and favorable con- ditions at harvest, Mr, Perry finds many cheerful items in examining the likelihood of this year's can- ning operations. The strawberry crop is over and it was a good one--the largest in several years. While canned straw- ries were unobtainable for two or three years during the war, ow- _ ing to shortage of metal for cans, this year's pack will probably be ual to that of the sizeable pack of 1941. Mr. Perry foresees more strawberry jam than usual, but no /nore frozen strawberries than were packed last year. There will be a less than aver- age pack of canned cherries, A fair-sized pack in British Columbia is more than balanced by the small quantity available for canning in Ontario, The good crop of both raspber- ries and loganberries assures an average pack of these fruits. Deliveries of apricots to canners in British Columbia have been only about 30 per cent of normal, but canning firms will probably can enough imported apricots to bring the pack up to average. It is expected there will be a larger than average pack of canned peaches, despite a decline in the Ontario crop. Production of peach- es in British Columbia is presently estimated at about 20 per cent above that of 1946. There are prospects for a good crop of plums, especially of prune plums. B.C. production is forecast as 20 per cent above that of last year, The pack, however, will cer- tainly be no higher than the re- cord pack of 1946, as there is a heavy carryover of canned plums from last year. A reduced crop of pears will re- sult in a reduced packs Of this fruit, however, thpeds a small car- ryover from 1946. The quality of apples to be can- ned and dehydrated depends larg- ely on the requirements of the United Kingdom. As for canned vegetables, the quantity of asparagus canned this year is small. Canners bought lit- tle, as a result of the high prices for fresh asparagus. There will be an average pack of spinach. The pack of peas this year will be smaller than that of last year when canners put up a record quantity. There are, however, enough of last year's canned peas carried over to give consumers all they are likely to need and this year's pack promises to be of the highest quality in years. There will be an average quantity of (green and wax) beans canned this summer. The pack of canned corn will probably be as large as in 946. When asked avout prospects for tomatoes, Mr. Perry sald: "Many growers and canners were pessi- mistic earlier in the season, but the long spell of hot weather in the principle tomato producing areas has brought tomatoes along re- markably. But even if it continues, and if harvesting is good and if there is enough labour, canners will probably have a smaller out- put of tomato producst than in put of tomato product than in tomato juice, tomato puree and so on, But there are prospects for more canned tomatoes. Outpost Caretaker 'Crusoe' 15 Years Victoria--(CP)--T. M, Tapp, who 15 years ago took the post of caretaken of an abandoned pulp and paper mill at Swansen Bay, Tula Island, midway between here and Prince Rupert, has not left the lonely island outpost since. Capt. E. M. Sheppard, skipper of the steamship Catala, said Tapp, a former high school teacher, spends a good deal of his time on the trap- line. Cougars, bears and wolves are plentiful on the island. On his last trip Tapp's wife and six child- ren were brought out to civiliza- tion so that the children could at tend school. UK Ships Stop Buying Food in Canuck Ports Montreal, Aug. 6.--(CP)--British ships arriving from the United Kingdom have all but quit purchas- ing foodstuffs in Canadian ports because of Britain's need to con- serve dollar exchange, it has been learned. Now, instead of 'stocking up as they have done for almost eight years, the ships are reaching Mon- treal fully stocked with food from England, Some ships carry enough supplies for a six-month voyage. D. R. Townsend, ship's stores ad- ministrator for the prices board said purchase of meat and other foodstuffs has dropped "considerab- ly" in the last month and he be- lieved the downward trend would continue, FINE WATCH REPAIRING Our Specialty FELT BROS.
