The plant grows from one to three feet high; leaves are dark green, ribbed; seeds borne in long narrow spikes, Control of twitch grass is par- ticularly difficult in 'poorly drained fields, and in wet seasons, It spreads from small patches by its creeping L | root stalks, which may be trailed TUESDAY AFTERNOON wire CJBC WGR CHUM CBL CKEY H ews CHUM 12:15--Real Stories From Leaf Hie Folk i :00--Welcome Traveller 12:00--Shady Valley 12:00--Wendy Warren--News Music OKDO the Lines WBEN WGR CBL CKEY from one section of the field to another on farm- implements. The seed is difficult to remove from timothy, orchard grass, and oats; and is a frequent impurity of these seeds. Control Methods: 1. Clean seed, free from weed L content is most important in pre- venting an infestation of weeds. 2. After harvest cultivation. Most practical and effective means of controlling twitch grass. Cultivation should be early as possible to take advantage of hot, dry summer weather. For this reason, early ma- turing varieties, and early harvest- ed crops are important allies in re- ducing twitch grass. Hay flelds and stubble. fields should be broken | pr immediately the crop is removed. A mokiboard plow, disc plow or one BC | way disc should be used to break the land exposing the root stalks 8 | to the sun.. This initial operation should not be deep as the effective- ness of the treatment depends on having the roots on the 'surface, WBEN | rather than covered by deep plow- CIBC WEBW News CEEY CEDO- of Helen Trent WGR Broadcast CB! ing. Disc harrows are 'not recommended as they tend to cover the roots, also to cut them into pieces, each section of which may grow. ° 3. A complete summer fallow is also a way of reducing twitch, using much the same methods as outlined OKEY | for after harvest cultivation. Sum- mer fallow, however, is costly, both in labor and in loss of a crop; and is not too effective in wet years. 4. Buckwheeat is a crop which may be used to advantage against twitch. UK Air Display In September Britain's aircraft companies are now busy preparing for their an- nual collective demonstration--the flying display and exhibition or- ganized by the Society of British Aircraft Constructors. It will be held this year, as last, at the Hand- ley Page aerodrome at Radlett, near London, and will be spread over the period September 9th to 14th, The 1946 display was the big- gest of its kind ever 'held, More than 50 civil and military types were demonstrated and the major- ity were parked where they could be Mgspected by the thousands of guests from almost every country in the world. This year the flying programme and aircraft park will be even more interesting. In the nine months which have elapsed since the 1946 display, several pro- totypes of the new United Kingdom airliners have been completed and been added to the list of exhibits and no version of other airliners have been built, There is every ospect, too, that a four-engined jet-propelled airliner--the first of its kind in the world--will take part. WATCH TUESDAY'S PAPER Organization Geneva, Aug. 25 -- (CP) -- Eric Hambidge, publicity director of the Food and Agriculture Organization, told a press conference Saturday that the British attempt to reduce or end food imports from the Un- ited States means that the possibil- ity of 'wheat or other surpluses should be examined immediately. An F.AO. conference opens here today with representatives of 49 countries, including Canada, at- tendihg. Its main task will be con- sideration, of a world food council to advise governments on world food requirements. If appointed, it would supplant the International Emgrgency Food Council whic! rec ends food allocations. mbidge said British regulations on food imports would be "dras! and "doubtless" would be a blow to the United States. He said plans should be made in advance to deal with possible surpluses developing in the United States. The whole situation is expected to be reviewed at the F.A.O. sessions, which may last three weeks. Agri- culture Minister Gardiner will head the Canadian delegation. Canadian delegates to the Geneva conferences often are asked about the condition of the Canadian wheat crop. If buyers are unable to finance United States supplies, they hope to ke able to secure Can- adian grain, t they realize Bri- tain is due to receive under con- tract some 160,000,000 bushels from half the total output. SAY REPORT UNTRUE Washington, Aug. 25--(CP) -- A spokesman for the British Treasury mission, here for talks on the Un- ited States loan agreement, yester- day said there was "not a word of truth" in any reports that Canada shared in the "run" for conversion of sterling which helped precipi- tate the United Kingdom dollar crisis a week ago. Four vessels -- led by the Essex Trader which docked Aug. 7 to head the summer vessel movement to Churchill -- have already headed east toward the Hudson Strait and England, their holds bulging with much-needed grain, £2 fifth the Savannah, due to pull up her anchor today, will carry a record cargo of 355,000 bushels of 4 wheat, 'But while the outward-bound have been carrying full cargoes the import pjcture here has not been quite so substantial. None 0° the vessels reaching here so far this month, save for the Essex Trader, has*brought any cargo. The Essex Trader unloaded 'ap- proximately 500 tons of supplies, including mining machinery, liquor, motorcycles, disinfectants, glass and china. The outgoing vessels have cut down the wheeat supplies. in the 2,500,000-bushel elevator here to 1,500,000 bushels, but a considerable amount of Saskatchewan grain is due to reach this Northern Mani- toba port by rail to replenish the diminishing stocks. All the outgoing vessels, however, are not loading with wheat. The Empire Beatrice, at present in har- bor, is loading a lumber cargo of 4,500,000 feet -- spruce timber from Northern Manitoba and Saskatche- was. mills. The Blackmore, recruited from Montreal, is bearing supplies for lonely northern outposts which which normally have been served by the Nascopie, carrying food and other equipment which will enable life in the Arctic districts to con- tinue without undue hardships.
