BROWN Correspondent Brougham, Aug. 25--The annual reunion picnic of the W.M.S, Auxil- fary of St. John's Church was held on the lawn of the C. Shepherd home with an attendance of about 40 members and guests, Mrs. Penny and daughter of Markham, and Mrs. John Tweedie of Whitevale and Mrs. Winton White of Claremont, were old tim- ers who have attended these reun- ion gatherings through the years. The ranks have thinned greatly of late years. President, Mrs. George Duncan was in charge of devotional period. In the business session Mrs. O. Burton, now of Stouffville, was giv- en a life membership certificate. Games and contests filled the time till the teatime hour, when threat- ening rain sent all to Township Hall, where a pountiful picnic sup- per was' spread and thoroughly en- Joyed. There passed away suddenly last week, an old time resident of Brou- gham, the late Miss Margaret Cas- sie, who with her parents, took up residence in Agincourt years ago. Since their passing Margaret has resided with relatives and friends. She died in Toronto. Her brother Arthur had arrived from Winnipeg and received intimation of her death, before he had seen her. The funeral was held Friday from her brother Fred's home, with interment at Agincourt, and, many old Brou- gham friends attended the funeral, Sympathy is felt for the bereaved by her passing, Some Brougham friends of the late Miss Kate Sadler of Green- wood, attended her funeral on Sat- urday last. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Miller have returned from their honeymoon trip and thoroughly enjoyed their short visit to the west, visiting a cousin, Mr. James Miller and Mrs. Miller of Carmen, Manitoba, who drove them to St. Thomas , N. Northern transportation officials here say that the situation has left the Arctic supply condition in a "poor. state" and that while Arctic seamen are working against ice and storm to beat the freeze-up with their freight hauls, the Eskimos along the coast already are talking of an early freeze, Regardless of conditions and pre- dictions the crews are hoping they'll be as lucky as the crew of one vessel which recently saw a happy ending in a dangerous situa- Ran Into Ice Several weeks ago the Roman Catholic Oblate Mission schooner Lady of the Lourdes, left Tukto- yaktuk, northesat of Aklavik, for Coppermine in Coronation Gulf, Early Freeze Threatens Battling Arctic Crews The heavier Fort Ross and St Roch plowed their respective ways stolidly through the ice, but the little "Lady"-- she weighs "only about 35 tons--found herself "grounded" on ice. The ice drift carried her 180 miles eastward in three days and, when she was in Coronation Gulf north of Coppermine, the Fort Ross was able to get close enough to pass a hawser and haul her off the ice into water again. Followed Lead Undamaged, the "Lady" come pleted her voyage to Coppermine in the normal fashion, following the lead of the Fort Ross. The "Lady" supplies a network of Arctic Missions that serves Eski- mos, Indians and white people with comfort for spirit and body alike. When the three vessels reached Coppermine; they were just begin- ning their season's work. They had only completed the first part of the first voyage of the season. From Coppermine the St. Roch was scheduled to atempt an epic voyage to Winter Harbor on the southern shore of Melville Islandj about 600 air miles north of Cop- permine, where Canada is estab- lishing a new polar weather station, The St. Roch visited Winter Har- bor once before, in 1944 when she was negotiating the North West Passage from east to west.
