In advance of the municipal election on Oct. 24, we're sharing a primer on local school boards -- how many students do they have, what areas do they serve and how big are their budgets? DURHAM DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD About: English public school board serving Durham Region, except for Clarington Number of students: 74,000 Number of schools: 136 Trustees: There are 11 trustees -- one representing the three north Durham municipalities of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock; three representing Oshawa; three representing Whitby; two representing Ajax; and two representing Pickering. Budget: $1,013,223,241 (2022-23) DURHAM CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD About: English Catholic school board serving Durham Region, except for Clarington Number of students: 21,524 Number of schools: The DCDSB has 39 elementary schools, seven high schools and six alternative and continuing education sites Trustees: There are eight trustees -- one representing the three north Durham municipalities of Scugog, Uxbridge and Brock; one representing Pickering; and two each representing Ajax, Whitby and Oshawa. Budget: $320,637,041 (2022-23) KAWARTHA PINE RIDGE DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD About: English public school board serving Clarington, Northumberland, Peterborough, Quinte West and Murray Ward. Budget: $467,991,226 (2022-23) PETERBOROUGH VICTORIA NORTHUMBERLAND AND CLARINGTON CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD About: English Catholic school board serving Clarington, Northumberland, Peterborough and Victoria Number of students: 15,000 Number of schools: 30 elementary schools and six high schools -- PVNCCDSB has seven schools in Clarington. Trustees: PVNCCDSB has seven trustees, including two seats representing Clarington Budget: $204,977,928 (2022-23) CONSEIL SCOLAIRE VIAMONDE About: French-language public school board with schools across the Greater Golden Horseshoe and Ontario Peninsula. Number of students: 13,000 Number of schools: 41 elementary schools and 15 high schools. Four of these are in Durham Region: Ecole elementaire Antonine-Maillet in Oshawa, Ecole elementaire Ronald-Marion in Pickering, Ecole elementaire Viola-Leger in Bowmanville and Ecole secondaire Ronald-Marion in Pickering. Trustees: There are 12 trustees, including one local seat that represents Haliburton, Northumberland, Peterborough, Durham, Kawartha Lakes, Hastings Budget: $248,026, 251 (2022-23) CONSEIL SCOLAIRE CATHOLIQUE MONAVENIR About: French-language Catholic school board serving students spread out across a 40,000- kilometre area that stretches from the Niagara Peninsula to Peterborough and from Toronto to Georgian Bay. Total number of students: 17,500 Schools: 47 elementary schools and 13 high schools. Four of these are in Durham: École élémentaire catholique Corpus-Christi in Oshawa, Ecole élémentaire catholique Jean Paul II in Whitby, École élémentaire catholique Notre-Dame-de-la-Jeunesse in Ajax and École secondaire catholique Saint-Charles-Garnier in Whitby.
