The Brooklin High School Bears Girls' hockey team has won the OFSAA provincial championship, its first in school history. The boys' team won that title in 2018 with the girls capturing bronze. After a perfect regular season and playoff run, the Bears were the second seed for the OFSAA championship which was held in Windsor, March 20-23. The team began its season with one goal: winning gold at OFSAA and becoming Ontario's number one team. Five senior players, Marley Bursey, Alissa Digiacinto, Alex Law, Jersie Lindley, and Reese Whiteman, were in grade 9 in 2020 when the team completed a 17-0 season with a LOSSA championship. They were on their way to OFSAA when the tournament was cancelled due to Covid. So this was their final chance for gold. The team was undefeated in league play, finishing first and outscoring opponents 31-4. In December, the Bears won their Brooklin Bears Elite Eight Tournament which included wins over St. Maximilian Kolbe (York Region Cham- pions) and Crestwood Prep School. In the LOSSA playoffs, Brooklin beat Pickering's St.Mary in the semis before defeating local rival Donald A. Wilson in the finals to capture a third consecutive LOSSA championship and fifth in six years. "Three things stand out to me that made the Bears so successful this season," said Head coach Jason Taylor. "First, our team depth allowed us to constantly roll three very strong lines that no opponent could match. Second, our goaltending was rock solid, led by Lauren Lyons. And third, since the beginning of the season, the players embraced the belief after a couple seasons where OFSAA wasn't on the table that this year was finally our time to win it all," Coach Rachel Chronis added, "What an incredible journey it has been over the last three seasons coaching this group of students. This team is a remarkable group of athletes with a skill set, mentality, physical ability and intelligence that really set us apart from the competition. The players were committed to our season goals and as coaches we couldn't be prouder of their execution and achievements." With a record of 20-0, (6-0 at OFSAA) in 2023, in addition to a 23-0 record in the previous two seasons the team's senior players, the Leadership Group, will graduate having never lost a single high school game, amassing an incredible overall record of 43-0.
