With the warmer spring days upon us and June being Bike Month, there's no better time to be out on your bike. The health benefits alone combined with the joy of being outside after a long cold winter should be an inspiration for everyone able to do so to be out on their bicycles. The Town of Whitby, in collaboration with Durham Region, is supporting Bike Month in several ways. These include Bike Bingo, which can be Brooklin tailored, as well as Smart Commute Durham which encourages cycling to work. Local libraries are also in support. Why not hop on your bike for a ride over to the Brooklin Branch on Vipond Rd. to learn more. Thursday, June 1, is also "Walk and Roll to School Day," the perfect opportunity for Brooklin parents and students to ride their bikes to and from school. There's also the possibility of a local school winning a prize. To enter, have your school send a picture of its school bike rack overflowing with bikes, of course! To learn more about Bike Month and all the fun activities, visit: https://www.durham. c a / e n / d i s c o v e r - ing-durham/bike-month.aspx#Resources For more information on Bike to School activities, e-mail: activetransportation@ durham.ca. The Brooklin Spring Fair opens on June 1 as well. Given its proximity to most Brooklin households, why not arrive by bike versus a car and help the environment? Fair organizers have confirmed that bike parking is available in front of the Luther Vipond Memorial Arena Parking Lot. But bring a strong bike lock while you enjoy the fair. Lastly, I encourage everyone to always ensure their bicycle is in proper working order prior to heading out for a ride. While out on your bike, follow the rules of the road, wear a helmet, and always remain alert. To learn more about safe cycling including downloadable brochures, please visit our website: www.durhamsafecycling.ca Please send your comments, questions, and suggestions to: info@durhamsafecycling.ca Until next time, stay safe and enjoy quality time on your bike.
