Scugog W.A. Hears Poem On New Church MRS. D. HOFE Correspondent Scugog, Dec. 16 --A very Merry Christmas to everyone. The Christmas message will be given us this year by our minister H. M. Denton on Sunday at 11.15 in Grace United Church and in the Head Church at 2 p.m. with a fire- side meeting at 8.50 p.m. in Grace United Church. Come and receive he message and help sing the car- ols. The last W.A, meeting for 1947 was held in the basement on Wed- nesday, Dec. 10. The meeting was opened by the President, Mrs. C. L. Fralicc The following verses were read by Mrs. R. Burnham: We've put a fine new church on this good old Scugog land, 'It's just the latest style with work- man-ship so grand. It seats a thousand people--{finest church in all the town, And when 'twas dedicated, planked ten thousand down; That is--we pald five thousand -- every deacon did his best-- And the Ladies' Aid Society, it promised all the rest. we We've got an organ in the church . --very finest in the land, It's got a thousand pipes or more, its melody is grand. And when we sit in cushioned pews and hear Mrs. Samells play, It carries us to realms of bliss un- numbered miles away. It cost a cool three thousand, and it's stood the hardest test; We'll pay a thousand on Ladies' Ald the rest. They'll give a hundred sociables, cantatas, too, and teas They'll bake a thousand angel cakes and tons of cream they'll freeze They'll beg and scrape, and toil and sweat for seven years or more, And then they'll start all o'er again for a carpet on the floor. No: it isn't just like digging out the money from your vest, When the Ladies' Aid gets busy and says, "We'll pay the rest." it--the Of course we're proud of our big church, from pulpit up to spire; It is the darling of our eyes, the crown of our desire; But when I see the sisters work to raise the cash which lacks, I sometimes feel the church is built on women's tired backs; And sometimes I can't help think- ing, when we reach the regions blest, That men will get the toil and Trying Turkey for Size Young housewife tries turkey for size on Wilmot's "Grove Farm near Brantford, but finds he doesn't fit very well even in a large roaster. Six months' old birds quite often exceed 30 pounds in weight. sweat, and the Ladies' Aid, the rest.
