MES-GAZETTE MONDAY, JANUARY 19, 1948 Tow A ; President Tries Out New Ski ET -- Above is shown President Harold Armstrong of the Oshawa Ski Club, giving the club's new ski-tow its official trial. The genial Prexy carries a lot of weight around at Raglan and the "modus operandi" was declared a success, The Raglan skiing grounds will be more popular than ever now, PORT NAPSHOTS Tonight at the Arena, two Junior "B" hockey games are on tap and they will feature a meeting at home between Orono and the Oshawa "B" squad. This game may not provide all the thrills that the nightcap will, but it is sure to be a hustling game, for the Orono kinds are definitely out to climb higher in the standings. The last half of the double-bill will see the league-leading Toronto Byers (who play their home games at the Arena) playing a not too char. itable host, they hope, to the second-place Whitby Red Wings. The Toronto team which uses a varied attack will find the Whitby kids tough to beat, what with their speedy short-pass method of reach- ing their opponents' net, Twill be a great might thought, whoever wing BY . H. Campbe L *» LJ Oshawa Generals are still in second place, still 5 points behind the Windsor Spitfires and 5 points ahead of Barrle Flyers. The Spitfires won their 22nd victory out of 25 games, on Saturday night on their home ice, defeating Guelph Biltmores 6-3. That hurts Guelph's playoff hopes and keeps Windsor well in front. Barrie Flyers blanked Marl- boros 9-0 on Friday night in Barrie and had a great chance to increase their lead over the 4th-place Galt Rockets and climb closer to the Oshawa Generals but they muffed it, when they dropped a 5-3 decision on Saturday afternoon to Marlies, on Toronto ice. Generals defeated Young Rangers 6-1 and but for a tough-luck move by Oleksulk, Pete Piquette would have had the honor of whitewashing Young Rangers. Believe-it-or-not, the cellar-dwelling Rangers haven't been blanked this season yet, although they've lost most of their games. Oshawa has three tough weeks ahead and maybe they'll not catch up to Windsor after all, however Barrie's defeat on Saturday by the Dukes should help the Generals to clinch second place, Tomorrow night, Oshawa visits St. Mike's in Toronto and on Thursday, the locals play Guelph in Galt. » * L Other games on Saturday night found Stratford Kroehlers pull- ing a 3-0 upset over Galt Rockets, right in Galt. It was the first win for Stratford over the Galt Rockets this Armstrong and Cadieux set the pace, the former scoring the first two goals on assists by Plerrb and then Cadieux got the final tally, unassisted. That win puts Kroehlers right up close tg 4th place again and frankly, we'd like to see Barrie and Stratford meet in one of the playoff rounds, for that would mean elimination for sure of at least one of the three toughest teams that have to be beaten if Generals are to cop the title, St. Kitts Teepees kept their playoff hopes alive by beating St. Mike's on Saturday in The Garden City. The win keeps Teepees in 7th place, only two points behind Marlboros, They may make it yet! . , *. * * The Generals looked very good on Saturday afternoon--although they still missed "Chuck" Blair, who will be ready for tomorrow night's game against the "Irish." "Sandy" Air came up with a nifty display of two-way hockey and popped a couple of goals for good measure, We thought Sullivan turned in his best game of the season--maybe his "Pop" should come and see him play every game. Ross Lowe was better than usual with Dick Gamble also beginning to return to form. He hasn't been "right" since his injured ankle but he showed more zip on Saturday than he has been displaying in recent games. Young Rangers played a charging, bumping game and "Dusty" Blair made the mistake of trying to play it their way. It spoiled his usual stick-handling skill and attacking threat and he was busy picking his pants off the ice most of the afternoon. Oleksuik also turned in a steady performance and it was tough on him to accidentally spoil the team's shutout. Pogue played for the grandstand (but without much protection from the officials) until he got himself a misc. penalty. After that he canie back and took everything the Rangers could hand out (and it was plenty) but he show- ed real "guts" by taking it, and staying on the ice to do a worth-while chore in the last 10 minutes of the 3rd period. * * LJ FUTURE GAMES--There are no games scheduled in the Junior "A" league tonight, but tomorrow night Oshawa Generals play at St, Mike's in the only Tuesday night battle , ... A doubleheader will be played tonight in the Junior "B" league at Oshawa, when Orono will meet Oshawa in the opener, and Byers Motors will play host to the second.place Whitby Red Wings in what should be the best game of the night. Tomorrow night the "B" schedule takes a rest with no games scheduled. LJ - LJ SPORT SHORTS--Eddie (Red) Tellier, star snapback with Mont- .al's Dominion champions, was expelled for life by the Canadian Rugby Jolgn 16 years ago today. Montreal's rejuvenated Canadiens gained a 1-1 tle with the Boston Bruins in a very wild game in Beantown over the week-end. Toronto Leafs kept the league lead by winning 4-1 against Boston and tying with New York over the week-end .... The Black Hawks helped the Leafs considerably in gaining first place, by dumping the Red Wings 5-4. The loss and win put the Leafs up in front, two points shead of the Wings . . . . Hiyo Chang Lee, a Korean with a marvelous turn of He claimed the 1,500 and 5,000 metre events, and would probably have won the 10,000 metre race but only he and an American were the only men in shape, so it was called off, Ld » * SCISSORED SPCRT-- (By The Canadian Press)--The possivliuy of Montreal Alouettes of the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union becoming a farm team of Brooklyn {odgers of the All-American Conference ap- peared last nightwith Branch Rickey, new Dodgers' owner, expressing interest in the proposition and Leo Dandurand, Alouettes President, ready to visit Rickey to discuss a working agreement. Wild- gy oung Rangers have been on the bottom of the 10-team Junior "A" heap almost all season, there hasn't been any team, so far, able to apply the whitewash brush to his doughty lads. In chalking up a 6-1 victory over them, in the nightcap of a Saturday afternoon doubleheader at Maple Leaf Gar- dens, the Oshawa Generals came about as close as it is possible to come to getting a shutout. They were leading 6-0 with less than two minutes left to play and then they neeidentally put one in their own net, to rob Pete Piguette of his shutout and save Youn Rangers from the whitewas treatment, in spite of themselves. A Tough-Luck Break It happened this way. Dick Gamble had just finished making it an even half-dozen tallies for the Generals, at the other end of the rink, when the battling Rangers charged into the Oshawa end from the centre-ice faceoff. There was a flurry of checking and puck- slapping and.in the scramble, de- fenceman Oleksuik reached for the elusive disc but instead of slapping it into the clear, he tap- ped it past a bewildered Piquette into the Oshawa net. Earlier in the afternoon, an in- and-out Barrie club lost a great chance to move closer to the Gen- erals in the hectic junior "A" race when they bowed 6-4 to the team they had blanked 9-0 the night be- fore. That upset win by Marl- boros gave the Generals their chance to increase their margin over the third-place Barrie Flyers and they went right out to make the chance good. . Two Quickies Do It Before the discerning eye of his once-famous hockey-playing fath- er, Frank Sullivan opened the scoring with a sizzling shot to top off, a nice rush, Almost from the face-off, Pogue set up Gerry Scott with a nice pass and the lanky centre made it 2-0.- Near the end of the period, Ross Lowe was thumbed off for employing an el- bow in his defensive tactics but Young Rangers, were unable to cash in on their advantage, As in the initial canto, Young Rangers, by dint of desperate skat. ing and rugged checking along the boards, were able to keep on even terms for about half of the second stanza and then just after the mid-way point, "Sandy" Air came through with a nice goal, on a play developed by Ted O'Connor. Prior to this, Sullivan had served a tripping penalty, without any serious results. Biddie was serv- ing a slashing penalty for Young Rangers and was just getting back on the ice when Air and O'Connor 1 hed their s ful spurt. Near the end of the period, Eric Pogue passed a remark to the linesman, when he was called off- gide for the third time, on a pell- mell rush and on the complaint of the linesman, the referee meted out a misconduct penalty.
