' " Ontario Regiment History CHAPTER VIII D-Day was September 3, 1048. Gapping - patrols landed with the support of infantry at 0600 hours. One-half hour later the main as- sault wave landed. As intelligence had forecast for three days that the Germans had left the Regglo area, cpposition was confined to very slight shelling and attacks by fight er-bimbers, The Italians proved un. willing to fight at all. Coast de- fense troops with white flags met the assault waves on the beaches and helped them to unload the landing craft. Beaches were mined and studded with pill-boxes and dug-outs and in the hills behind, were forts and gun emplacements. But there were no troops manning these strongly constructed defenses, and all objectives were taken in a few hours, At 1600 hours on D-day most of the RHQ tank crews were enjoying {a swim in the Straits of Messina. Heavy demolitions had been expect. ed in the area, but none materializ- ed until the advance reached Bag- nara Calabra. B Sqn. landed on the Callio Mar. ina beach at 0900 hours. Here Capt, L. I, Knowles was accidentally wounded while guiding tanks on the LST. Gallico Marina .was a small town whose main street, wide enough for tanks and heavy vehi- cles, ran into a sand and gravel { beach. Vehicles could drive dry-shod from LSTs onto the street which led to the main road north! from Regglo. As it had not been planned to land tanks on this beach, no gides from 17 Bde. met B Sqn., and they were unable to contact the bri. gade which was progressing much more rapidly than had been antici- pated, Progress of the tanks was further slowed by traffic conditions. The |. main coast road was jammed with vehicles of all kinds looking for har. bor areas and the exits from the beaches were completely choked. | When finally the squadron did join up, the services of tanks were not needed since there was no opposi- tion. In the afternoon, two troops DO | accompanied the infantry through y Villa San Giovanni, The squadron was then concentrated near Con- cessa in order to get it off the road. RHQ landed on the Gallico beach at 1100 hours. All vehicles were dri- ven off the road beside a church and Lt.-Col. Johnston went to find Div. HQ. Orders from Divisional Commander to remove tanks from the road preceded the finding of a suitable harbor near Catona. Thus the first day ended. Two of the 699 prisoners taken by 5 Div. were Germans and no serious op- position had been encountered at any time. So long as conditions re- mained the same, no tanks would be used since the necessity of oper- ating on a single centre line made them a great hindrance to traffic and in any case, it was impossible to deploy them off the road, At 0300 hours September 4, A Echelon landed with a Sqn. wheels and harbored near RHQ. A Sqn. tanks landed on September 5 and Hashored in a wadi north of Ca- ona. At 0350 hours, B Sqn, was warned to move if required in support of 15, Inf, Bde, (1 York and Lancs, 1 Green Howards and 1 KOYLID), 17 Bde. by now held the high ground covering Cannitello and Villa San Giovanni with patrols forward to- ward Scilla, 15 Bde. captured Ma- lieucca and Paperone, and was to pass through these positions, cut the lateral foad Sinopoli--Pellegri- na at a point southeast of Pellegri- na, 15 Bde. made contact with the enemy (111 Bn. 15 Pz, Gr. Regt.) in the area of Bagnara Calabria. But north of Scilla, a major demolition blocked the road to all traffic, so the tank move had to be called off, This was the last time in the Cala- brian campaign that the operational use of tanks bepame at all likely, (Continued next week) Moose Jaw Couple Build Own House Moose Tad, Sask. Less than four inches long, 2% inches high and weighing less than one pound, the three-tube radio has been constructed by a German radio technician, Bernhard Wobbe, in his small workshop at Winsen, near Hamburg. Radio experts hafe subjected the set to thorough tests for efficiency and the German press hails it as a partial solution to the country's extreme shortage of radios, as it can be produced with only a per- centage of the raw material need- él for the construction of an ordin- ary small radio set. n spite of optimistic press refer- ences to the possibilities of mass- Prodastion, however, German radio dustry officials would not com- mit themselves to a guess on the length of time which must elapse before the Pidgey radio is being turned out b e hundreds. That it will not be in the near future is indicated by the fact that the serious shortage of raw mate: rials, upon which production de- pends, i is improving only with pain- ful slowness. Wobbe who confidently a great future for his mic et set which he has christened "Knirps" --meaning "small boy" in collo- quial German -- claims that with only four yards of ordinary wire to act as aerial, his "Knirps" can pick up between 30 and 40 foreign stations on its medium and short waves, "Knirps" was not built as a novelty but with an eye to economy in material and its small size--it can be carried in the palm of the hand--has recommended it to some foreign manufacturers. Wobbe, however, told me that he has already decided that the war- disabled and refugees will have redicts first priority on his midget set and! he is not interested at the moment in the export market. His attitude is that the needs of millions of radioless Germans should be filled first. The midget "Knirps" will be sold for 200 rm ($20) when Wobbe is able to mass-prcduce it in a factory he is planning to develop in Hamburg. This is about double the pre-war equivalent price, but Wobbe, like most other German manufacturers, has to pay high prices for the scarce raw materials and technical equipment he needs. Society. After promoting drama en the west coast and other parts of the Dbminion for 46 years, Bullock- Webster retired last spring and re- turned to Britain where he now lives at Fowey, England. One of the most prolific play- wrights in Canada, the tall, erect and handsome Bullock-Webster was widely known as well as an actor, public speaker, politician, bua | man and soldier. Born 70 years ago in Llandebr, Wales, he became an actor when injuries forced his dis- charge from the British Army dur- ing the South African War, After playing in several musical comedies on the London stage, Bullock-Webster joined a touring company which was coming to the United States. That was the first step in his initial trip to Canada. "I had always wanted to go to Canada," he sald later. "I went to the Okanagan Valley in British Col- umbia and helped the late George Kirby form an amateur club, "Later I returned to England to accept an offer by George Dance-- later Sir George Dance--to play in "The Chinese Honeymoon." He re- mained with the company several years and finally became stage man- ager and director. When he recovered from injuries suffered when his horse fell in a music hall turn, Bullock-Webster returned to Prince Rupert in 1910 where he was elected alderman and founded the Prince Rupert Little Theatre. At the same time he found- ed and became manager of the Northern B.C. Agricultural Associa- tion. After the First World War, in which he served as company com- mander of the 54th Kootenay Bat- talion, and finally as brigade major, he became labor.manager of the Vancouver Harbor Marine Ship. yard and founded the B.C. Dramatic School. From 1921 to 1933 more than 700 students studied stagecraft, litera. ture and public speaking at the dramatic school in Victoria and Vancouver. Some won scholarships in London; others have done well | on London and New York stages. The Drama Association grew so rapidly that. Education Minister George Welr created a drama branch of his department in 1985 and placed Bullock-Webster in charge. He visited all parts of the province to form drama groups. "Festivals profits were usually distributed for welfare people. When the Second. World War came there were 198 Little Theatres, Guilds, Societies and Drama Clubs and school clubs developing.
