PAGE TWELVE THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE | SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 1948 The Power of the Holy Spirit SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON FOR SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 1948 eS By NEWMAN CAMPBELL (The International Lesson on the above topic for February 15 is John 14:25, 26; Acts 2:1-4; Acts 3:1-4:31; Galatians 5:22.26, the Memory verse being Psalm 27:14, "Walt for Jeho- vah: Be strong, and let thy heart take courafe; Yea, wait thou for Jehovah,") , WHILE JESUS was still on earth with His disciples, He tried to them that in a short time He would be leaving them to suffer martydom and death, but that He would rise from the dead; but they could not understand Him. Even the last night of His earthly life, He talked to them and gave them rules for living as He would have them: "keep My command- ments; love one another. .. . These thing have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you." "But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, he will teach you all things, and Bring all things to your remembrange whatsover I have said unto you." Jesus was crucified, He rose from the dead, and ascended into heaven, and we are told by Luke how this Holy Spirit did come to the discip. les to comfort them-and give them courage and power. "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they (the disciples) were all with one accord in one | They place. . Coming of the Holy Ghost And suddenly there 'came a sound from heaven as of a rushing, mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting, 'And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as"of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 'And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began. to speak with other tongues, as the Spirity gave them utterance." The Holy Ghost and the Spirit mean the same thing. Filled with the Spirit, they nob :only spoke in their own tongues.to men of dif- ferent nations, telling them of Jesus and Hig gospel, but they received rare courage so that those, like Pet- er, who had denied his Lord because he was afraid, was no longer a coward, but a bold, fearless man, as witness his actions from that time on. Some time later (we do not know just when), Peter and John went together to the temple at the hour of prayer. Now a certain man, lame from birth, was carried each day to the Gate called Beautiful to beg. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked alms of them. Peter looked at him, saying, "Look on us." The man waited, expecting to receive money, but Peter said, "Silver and gold have I none; but such as I have tell | and © amazement, give I thee: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." Taking the man by the right hand, Peter lifted him to his feet and his feet and ankle bones re- ceived strength, and he leaped up and walked with them into the temple, praising God. And all the people who had known him' from chikihood were filled with wonder They gathered around the three men in the porch called Solomon's, and Peter talked to them, accusing them of being the cause' of Jesus' death when Pontius Pilate would have let Him go and accepting a murderer in Hi "Ye denied the Holy One and the Just, . . , And killed the Prince of Life, whom God hath raised from the dead; whereof ye are witnesses. |" 'And His name through faith . .. hath made this man strong, whom ye see and know." ins Five Thousand Peter then told them -he knew it |. was through ignorance that they had acted as they had done, and then asked them to repent and be converted, and five thousand were won to Chrigt. Now the priests and Sadducees came upon them and "being griev- LET'S ALL GO TO CHURCH REGULARLY | Che Golden Text gE "Wait for Jehovah; Be strong, and let 'thy heart take courage;) \ Yea, wait thou for Jehovah." ~Psalm 27:14. Peter spoke forth boldly, saying that it was through the power of Jesus Christ whom they had crucified. The priests saw the man who had been healed and they consulted together and decided to let the apostles go with a warning that they were not to preach the gospel any more. Peter, however, answered "Whether it be right in the sight of God to heark- SPIRITUALIST CHURCH Pastor -- Rev. Coros LOF. Hall, 20 King St. W. GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH 150 ALBERT ST. Rev. N. It has been or is being trans- lated into every known language and dialect in the world. It went with our boys as they marched and sailed and flew in the last great war. Free copies are placed in hotel rooms, hospital rooms and many schools, The Bible is really a collection of ooks, some of which are three thousand years old. Some contain the foretelling of events whose ful- fillment is recorded by history. Other prophecies are eine ful- filled before our eyes. The thoughtful perusal of the Bible has a beneficial effect upon morals. A very small percentage of those who regularly attend Sun- day School ever appear in juvenile court, Magistrates recognize this and usually appoint that those re- lease on suspended sentence shall attend Sunday School. Though the war is over the peace has not yet been won, There is great distres of nations agrravat- ed by political upheavals, instabili- ty of currency and actual hunger. India has won her freedom, or -- hasn't she? China is still at war within her borders. Blood flows in Palestine and Europe talks of the iron curtain. Uneasiness is every- where, Never was the world more in need of the savng truths taught in the Gospel. These truths which fo- cus in Jesus Christ if accepted, will bring rest to the weary, comfort to the worried; yea, new life to the souls of men. Politics says, "Legis- late you way out"; philosophy says, "Reason your way out"; wealth says, "Buy your way out"; milita- rism says, "Fight your way out"; pleasure says, "dance your way out"; Jesus says, "I am the Way", We have tried the others and failed. Let us now turn to the Bible and to Jesus Christ. || 138 deputies in the old Dail dissolv- ed last fall.
