Not that there aren't just as many tow-headed babies being born. We're talking about grown up babies. Less bleaching is going on. Hair specialists say that they be- lieve that many members of the light-headed sisterhood have wrestled with the peroxide bottle until they are all wrestled out. If Nature wants to turn their heads drab, or even light brown, then let 'er rip. They don't care. It is a rare blonde who stays golden after the age of thirty-five. Chemical changes take place in the tiny pigment cells within the hair shafts that provide the shade or tone. Why this happens nobody knows. Nobody knows precisely why the hair turns grey. Possibly nobody care enough to take the trouble to find out, especially as it is not a vital matter. During the platinum frenzy you ran into a blonde every time you turned around. The white-gold shade was produced by bleaching the hair to the limit, If an operator got beyond that limit the hair was practically ruined. Not because of the peroxide, but because of the ammonia that was used in the treatment. Ammonia takes the life out of the hair. It becomes dry, telike, and breaks at the touch of he comb. That was one beauty madness that soon subsided. Men and women who have made a long study of hair dyeing and bleaching are able to perform what seem to be miracles, and without damaging results to the hair. It is not work that should be done by inexperienced hands; If Goldie Locks finds that she is gradually turning into a brunette, as far as her thatch is concerned, and just can't bear it, let her seek out an operator who is skilled and con- scientious. The conscientious part is as important as the efficiency. The medium used will probably be what is called white henna. There is no such herb; it is just a trade name. A paste is made by combining powdered magnesium Blondes are getting scarcer. LAR AR carbonate with peroxide to form a mixture the consistency of whip- ping cream. A few drops of am- monia are added to hasten the bleaching process. No, we are not giving the proportions. This is one beauty game that should not be played at home, : The pack is applied quickly, timed carefully. A tiny bit is rub- bed away at the temples, where the hair is thinnest, to see how the bleaching is progressing. When the right shade is observed, the dpplication is removed. But that is not the end of this project. The shafts will continue to push out from the scalp, and they will be darker than the growth that has been treated. So there must be a touch-up every two months, It is a life sentence, WHAT SHOULD I DO ABOUT Addressing a Doctor? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman Will you please settle this ques. tion which is "under discussion" in our family: When you speak to your doctor (or dentist) is it always necessary to add his name, for ex- ample "Doctor Bryant?" Isn't it all right to address him as "Doctor"? OF a When you address your doctor or dentist always add his name to his title, "Docter Bryant". You wouldn't address a man without a title as "Mr." would you? Should Two Spoons or Fork and Spoon Be Placed? Dear Mrs. Beeckman: To settle a disagreement in our bridge club, we appeal to you. Re- cently we were served ice cream in various shapes, eup cakes, and cof- fee, with which we were provided a teaspoon and a salad fork. L I, too, dislike eating ice cream with a fork, but under the circum. stances I would have preferred this rather than eating the ice cream and sipping the coffee with the same spoon. I am quite sure that the hostess intended the procedure chosen by the members who used the fork for both cup cake and ice cream, the spoon for the coffee only, and this js a practical service very often used when ice cream, cake, and coffee (or tea) are serv. ed at tea-timé, or for evening re. freshneuts. In This Circumstance: Large Wedding and Reception in Ques. . tionable Taste Dear Mrs, Beeckman: I am planning on being married in about two months, to a young man whose wife died about four. teen months ago. What kind of wedding and reception would be proper for us to tlave under the above circumstances? I have many friends and would like to have a large reception, but would not like io Make this plan if it is not suit. FN Since your fiance's wife died so short a time ago, it would show best taste on both your part and on the part of your fiance to have a very small and simple wedding gnd reception, inviting only the mem. bers of the families ang perhaps a few close relatives ang intimate friends. Under the circumstances for you to have a large reception would be in questionable taste. BUNDESEN, M.D. WHAT TO DO FOR "PINK EYE" CONJUNCTIVITIS, or inflam- mation of the lining membrane of the eye, is something which most of us have experienced at one time or another. Since this disorder is so common, it is fortunate that it is rarely serious. Vision is threatened in only rare instances, when the inflammation is due to gonococci germs or when "there is trachoma. ese seem to be the only germs causing the in. flammation of the membrane which are also capable of invading the cornea or dark portion of the eye. When this occurs, there will be pain as well sensitivity to light. Na- turally any. patient with this type of conjunctivitis should be under the care of a specialist since it in- voives danger of pérmanent dam- age to the eyes. Usually however conjunctivitis is not painful. As a general rule it is accompanied by an inflammation of the eyelids known as blepharitis. Ordinarily there is a discharge from the eyes and the lids are stuck together when the patient awakens in the morning. The eyelashes are usually matted together and the conjunctivia reddened and inflam. ed. If there is a great deal of swelling in the tissues but not much discharge it is probable that the conjunctivitis is due to a virus in. fection. Sometimés in elderly people the eye ig dry and the lining membrane becomes sore and sticky. This is due to a lack of the normal amount of tear formation. In such cases, there is also dryness of the mouth. The eye condition is called kerato- conjunetivitis sicca. Infection of the conjunctiva may occur with the formation of ulcers or sores, Infection of® the eye can also occur in tuleremia and in diphtheria. Sometimes conjunctivitis is due to allergy or sensitivity to dusts or pollens. The attacks in such cases, usually occur during the spring months. The treatment for conjunctivitis depends, to some extent, upon the type of infection present. In most instances, the conjunctivitis clears up within a short period of time with proper treatment. The eye may be irrigated with various anti. septic solutions. Penicillin, as well as sulfonamide ointments, may be employed in the eye with benefit. Some boracic ointment, placed be. tween the lids at night, is helpful in keeping the lids from sticking tegethr, ' In some cases, the physician will want to take culture from the eye to determine what germs are pro. ducing the condition before carry. ing out the necessary treatment. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS F. M.: I have an irritation in my throat which causes me to cough, I do not smoke or drink. What could cause this trouble? Answer: It is possible that you have a chronic infection of one of the sinuses in the nose. Material dripping into the nose and throat will cause an irritation of this type, A chronic infection of lymph tissue might cause the same disorder. A careful study should be made by a throat specialist. ; It Happens Tomorrow Ladies' Aux. Patriarch Milit. No. 11 Centre St. W.A. East Group LR AT THE Y.W.CA. Hollywood Highlights By BOB THOMAS Hollywood-- (AP) -- Abbott and Costello now plan to leave in July for England, where they will make appearances and film a picture. Lou told me that he and Bud are considering two scripts, one of which will be filmed under their own auspices in England this sum- mer. They also plan to play four weeks at London's Palladium. "But we won't bring the money tiome from the Palladium engage- ment," he added. "We will donate half of the proceeds to aid English orphans and half for Italian or- phans." "The Iron Curtain" has returned from some additional shooting, but not because of protests from friends of the Soviet Union. "We are shoot. ing the ending," Dana Andrews ex- plained, "and a few added scenes to make the picture more melodra- matic." The story, based on the Canadian spy trials, has been film. ed in semi-documentary style. Marlene Dietrich almost balked at playing a scene in "A Foreign Affair." She was supposed to play a newsreel scene in which she would .| heil Hitler (played by Bobby Wat- son) and chat with him. Director Billy Wilder talked her into doing the scene. "Oklahoma!" is again being talk. ed about as a film vehicle. The am- bition of Producer Paul Jones is to make it with Bing Crosby as star. That would be a great combination, but with the show still a hit wher- ever it plays, I doubt if it will be filmed for at least a decade. . . Producer Lester Cowan 'is going ahead with his plans to film "The Free Press," which he says will be a frank treatment of newspaper freedom in the United States. He is negotiating with John Hersey to write the screenplay. "Call Northside 777" (TCF) is an. other semi-du.umentary, and, un. like most film trends, this one hasn't worn thin. "Northside" packs as much action and excitement as its | predecessors and makes the ordinary Hollywood film seem pale in com parison. James Stewart leads the cast in the story of the Chicago newspaper man whose research freed an innocent man convicted of murder. VICTORIAN ORDER OF NURSES -- A -- ANNUAL MEETING ST. Not that the liquid glow is to be abol- ished. Not at all! You put a drop of cuticle oil or cream on each nail-- right over your polish--and buff like everything. The purpose of this treatment is to speed up the blood streams in underlying tissues. Your nails live on the nourishment they bring. The more good food they have, the less likely the chance that nails will be brittle or that ridges will form. Incidentally, the oil seeps into the surrounding cuticle, keeping it soft, so that the merest touch of the pusher will keep it detached from the nail fabric. Polish Remover Another smart idea; when using a polish remover, put a few drops on a pledget of cotton and let it rest on the nail for a minute be- fore going into action. By this means the removal will be quick and thorough, the rosy glow will come off more neatly than if you rush the job. Use your nail file with a see-saw motion, working from sides to cen-: tre, being careful not to dig down into the flesh at the sides of the nails. You'll find nail nippers more convenient than the needle point scissors for removing hang nails and little stubs of cuticle that are fluffed up after the pusher is used for detaching the flesh. Interesting Item 1 And here is another interesting item; if you file your nails down far at the sides, they will be likely to break because you are weaken- ing the protective cushions. Those tiny white spots that some- timés appear on human talons are often caused by pressure at the | nail base. It has a deplorable effect upon the matrix, the new nail fab- om ATKIN 5 SIMCOE ST. S.
