FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20, 1948 THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE SEVEN BEAUTY FOR YOU By HELEN Let fashion dictators lay down the law; it doesn't matter. Let them peplum the spring frock, place bulky drapes just abaft the waistline. Make.believe hip spread is all. right, if one fancies the mode, but adipose bulk is just as . 8s it ever was, The trend toward the smaller walst has been a good thing. It has in. spired women to do torso.twisting exercises. 'Torso-twisting also dis. possesses whatever excess flesh ex- tend from waistline 'to thighs. Feminine frames are not sup- posed to be serpentine; they should . be gracefully undulating. Firm, high breasts, a neat equator, hips practically the same measurement as the bust; that is the formula. Mrs. Hippy is still out of the pic. 'ture. Spread amidships means that the youthful shape has de. 'parted. It is not to be tolerated. It slows up activities, interferes with graceful movement. The wo. man who carries around adipose luggage is not likely to be stepping pretty. If the accumulation goes 'on' with the years, she plods. At Jong last she may waddle, Terrible! If fatty tissues have formed on the hips, the rest of her anat my remaining normal, diet wil' mot help. She must buckle dowh to regular exercise. In reducing salons the electric horse is enwrloyed to jiggle fat cells into a state of dissolution. The mechanical animal will trot, can. 'ter or gallop. When in its most active state, the vibrations are powerful. The rider, seeing slen- erness just ahead, hangs on and suffers. She is working ir a good cause. Heavy massage will serve to tone muscles and -deplete the fleshy cushions; that slso is a part of professional trealment. Considering that few women have time for these indulgences, and some feel that the beauty bud- get will not stand the strain, the solution of the problem is to de. vote two periods a day to hip re. modeling. Lie on your back on the floor, Men Prefer Slender Hips JAMESO! Fat cells don't linger on active, strong muscles. +p hands at the sides, feet ten or twelve inches apart. Lift the right foot straight up in the air, streich to the limit and roll to the left, touching the floor with the toes of the right foot as far as they can reach. There shouid be a strong muscle pull from waist to the calves of the leg. That does the business. Fat cells will not linger on active, strong muscles. Six times with the right foot, six witin the left and repeat. Two five-minute periods the first day, and the second. After that two . ten-minute periods, followed by torso-twisting, which means turning the upper portion of the body from side to side, pivoting at the waistline. WHAT SHOULD 1 DO ABOUT Seating Special Guests? By MRS. CORNELIUS BEECKMAN Dear Mrs. Beeckman: i My husband and I are planning to celebrate our twenty-fifth wed- ding anniversary by giving a din- ner in a restaurant that specializes in catering for such occasions. 'Among our guests will be our pas- tor, our son, our maid of honor and best man, and my husband's moth- er. Will you please suggest the correct seating-arrangements for our guests? Will you also suggest table decorations? 3 Since you and your husband are so fortunate as to have your two wedding attendants with you on this important occasion, I suggest that you use the same seating ar- rangements you used at the wed- ding: You and your husband seated . next_to each other, you at your hushand's right; on your right, the best man, and at your husband's left, the maid of honor. Your pastor might sit at the right of your hus- band's mother, your son at her left, and the other guests according to compliment to them and con- geniality. : As the centre decoration for your table you might have the so-im- portant wedding anniversary cake, as elaborate a cake as you wish to have, a white cake artistically and appropriately decorated--with the dates (1923-1948) and you and your husband's initials outlined, if possible, with tiny silvered can- dies. The cake-cutting ceremony should be the significant one you at your wedding reception; when you, the "bride", are ready to cut the cake (to be served alone as dessert or with ice cream), the cake is set in front of your place, and you cut the first slice and share it with your husband, the Frying Pan grease, stains and odors vanish with o whisk of DsB Cleaning Paste. But don't stop there... try it on your sink or tub, and learn for yourself. Remember "Canada's Cleanest Word"' «+. We are a group of sev- eral girls who are planning to go together to the dance; that is, we are not going with men partners. We would like to know if, under this circumstance, we can wear eve- ning dresses. What is your ad- vice ? A. B. When for this kind of dance it is announced that the type of dress is "optional," you usually find that the majority of guests dress in- formally. And I believe that you girls will be more at ease when you arrive, will feel less conspicu- ous at thé dance, without escorts if you wear simple, street.length af- ternoon dresses, rather than to give the impression of being "all dress- ed up" in floor-length evening dresses. To Small, Informal House Wedding, Guests Are Invited Informally Dear Mrs. Beeckman: A widow of thirty-ish age, with one child, is marrying a man who has not been married before, also in his thirties. They are to be mar- ried informally in her home, by her minister, and to the ceremony and gathering afterward they ave in- viting about thirty-five guests, relatives and close friends. Will you please tell me what kind of in- vitation to send for this occasion? M For such a small, informal wed. ding, it is entirely proper, and quite customary, for the prospec- tive bride to invite the guests by word-of-mouth, or by telephone, Or, if she prefers, or jf some of the guests live at a distance, she may write cordial little notes of invitation, giving the occasion day, date, hour and place. Watch The Charming Person By Mrs. Beeckman Watch the person that you con- sider has Charm. You'll see how he or she draws out the other | person, instead of insisting on being the only one in the spot- light. | (Mrs. Beeckman will be glad to answer questions submitted by readers.) BUNDESEN, M.D. Treating Cancer of the Lip It is not often that a mild dis- order develops into a serious one, but cancer of the lip is a decided exception to this general rule. It| often begins as nothing more dan- gerous seeming than a mere thick- ening of the skin, or it may develop from such apparently harmless conditions as a tiny sore or a re- current cracking of the skin. If any of the conditions develop which might lead to cancer of the lip, immediate treatment by a phy- sician is advisable, As a rule, some type of simple operative treatment is all that is required to get rid of these condi- tions. Naturally, when the thick- ened skin or ulcer is removed, all of the affected tissues should be cut out. : On Lower Lip. . The usual location of a carcino- ma of the lip is on the lower lip. It appears that this type of tumor growth occurs almost entirely in men. It is thought that the con- tinued exposure to bad weather or irritation from tobacco may help to bring on this type of cancer. The tumor itself is raised above the skin and may be Some are inflamed, If a cancer has developed, opera- tive treatment is imperative. A small cancer of the upper lip can be removed and the edges of the wound brought together. In some cases, however, the growth may have extended to such an extent that large amounts of tissue must be removed, and various types 4 plastic operations done to repai. the defect in the lip. Tissues may be taken from the lower lip to aid in the repair of the upper; sometimes tissues may be taken from the forehead. In those cases in which the tu- mor growth is quite large, or the patient cannot undergo an opera- tion, treatment with radium and X-ray is used. Tissues Examined Whenever cancer of the lip is to be removed surgically, some of the tissues should be examined at once under the microscope to determine the type of tumor present. This is necessary so that the surgeon can decide whether or not the lymph glands in the neck will also have to be removed. In one type of tumor known as squamous cell epitheliomas, it is suggested that the lymph glands be taken out in all cases since this type of tumor is likely to metastasize, that is, the tumor cells are carried from the original growth to other parts of the body where they lodge and grow. Any person with a sore on the lip, which does not heal within three weeks, should see a doctor. -- es QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS A. C. L J Much of the success and dur- ability of a permanent wave de- pends upon the thorough shampbo, which is the basic principle of hair loveliness. The home shampoo is not always what it should be. You are fighting a combination of at- mospheric dust and sebaceous oil; it does not give way easily. The shampoo medium must be first class, washing technique perfect. Start with a brisk brushing fol- lowed by a warm water rinsing with a bath spray. Using a good liquid-conditioning shampoo, do zig-zag rubbing along the hair line--forward, sides and back. Gradually fluff up the suds to the crown of the head. When scrub- bing the crown let thumbs and fin- gers meet, do a vigorously clawing movement, Warm Water Instead of turning on the spray to remove the lather, keep pouring a little warm water on the head to weaken the suds. While doing this, keep lifting the hair, strand by strand.. Then tun on the spray, using water as hot as can be com- J * fortably endured and rinse thor- oughly. Repeat the lathering, repeat the spraying. If the hair is extremely oily, there should be three soap- ings and a fina] rinse with vine- gar. Fill the wash bowl with warm water, add three tablespoonfuls of vinegar, pour over the head, lifting the hair so the water will be dis- tributed. Work yg Up Lather The important part is to keep working up the lather with a little warm water added. Otherwisé¢ you may have so thick and rich a suds that removal by the spray is not easy. This method is used by many beauty shops. As the water is add~ ed, the suds are squeezed away from the hair and then the spray is used. The balls of the fingers, instead of the tips should be used when manipulating the scalp since the finger nails may cause tiny abra- sions. If dandruff is present, the scalp should be massaged with hot min- eral oil the night before the sham- poo.
