KENNETH FLETCHER Correcpondent Harmony, Feb. 24--While not a success from a financial standpoint, last Friday's ice carnival, sponsor. ed by the Harmony Welfare Asso- ciation, provided a lot of fun and pleasure for all those attending. This second carnival got off to a bad start when the weatherman decided to put on a spring act right up until last Thursday night. With the return of a cold wave, rink caretaker Al Rundle did every- thing he could to put the ice in shape, from an early morning flooding, scraping down the bumps, in fact just everything he could pcssibly do to have a nice sheet of ice, * In the meantime, interest in the carnival was waning, with everyone figuring that skating was out of the picture for another year. Pos. sibly that is why there was such a small attendance and lack of en. tries in the various classes. Sev. eral races were run off to add to the fun and also to dispose of some of the prizes, By the way, we. no. ticed one or two rather original get- ups--one was a dressed.up Christ. mas tree, another 'a bright red Christmas package. Every child had a free 'hot-dog and then, to make absolutely sure that no child had been overlooked, President Wes Powers went down OF-WEARING PEARLS THAT DIDN'T WAH PERFECTLY. Thirty bassinette linings have been made by the members for Bowmanville hospi- tal, In the unavoidable absence of Home Economics convener, Mrs. Howard Cryderman very ably pre. sided for the program. After com. munity singing of numbers of Val. entine sentiment, Miss Muriel Ste. vens delighted the members with two readings "Calling Willie" and "The Deaf Chicken". Dr. J. C. Devitt and Dr. W. M. Rudell were introduced by Mrs. Cryderman and Dr. Rudell spoke on 'Child Dentistry" giving young mo- {hers a wealth of information and advice, Since foundation teeth are in place at birth, Dr. Rudell stress. ed the importance of pre-natal care. Procpective mothers under the care of a physician should have ade. quate apd balanced diet with con. Wtitions of living conducive to emo- tional stability. Though foundation teeth are in place at birth there may be a difference of several months in time of teeth appearing in different children. Breast feed- ing was advised since the occur. rence of disease is less and the de. velopment of nose, roof of mouth and jaws is better when a child is fed in nature's way. In eating hab. its hard foods are important since good general health aids in the building of teeth just as good teeth' ayp essential to general health. The proper use of a straight brush not only cleans the teetta but increases healthful circulation of the blood around the teeth, Gentle brushing toward the tip of the tooth was 'advised and no food after teeth are cleaned for the night. When dental care is necessary it should be given 'early and checks made every four to six months with X-rays in case of possible abnor. malities. Children should learn ear. ly to do for themselves, ie. dress. ing, etc. Dr. Devitt adding a few words CROSSWORD By Eugene Sheffer] HORIZONTAL 1.yield as clear profit founder of Pennsylvania minor prophet Australian ostrich inner coat of iris 42. 46. 48. 50. 51. 52. 53. 54. 55. 1. verororm |. space gifted . deprivation row unit of work for fear that March date female ruff VERTICAL eft 4. 8. 12. 13. awd = "9. lower jaw: "bone x 10. worthless > scrap 11. observe " '16. procrastinate 20. insect 22. mountainese shoes 24. small bed ~ 25. cardinal 2.
