A: auctioneer, British Farmers Face Hard Years By JAMES McCOOK Canadian Press Staff Writer London--(CP)--Agricultural re- turns for the United Kingdom have reminded the nation in the midst of a mild winter that it will take years to recover from the shattering losses in the storms of 1946-47. More than 2,000,000 sheep and lambs were lost last winter, along with at least 30,000 cattle and ex- tensive damages to cropland by frosts and floods. This year the weather has been temperate and farmers who fear- ed their feed supplies would be insufficient to carry even their reduced herds have reported con- ditions good with spring and new grass in sight. But a December census showed the total of sheep and lambs was 8,207,000 in England and Wales and 4,886,000 in Scotland, a total 24 | decline of 1,900,000 compared with The total of cattle and calves was down 55,000 to less than 7,000,- 000 for + "ngland and Wales but the relatively small decline covered all categories except calves of less than one year. In Scotland about 2,000,000 cattle were reported with an increase of 24,000 in beef animals and a de- cline of 10,000 in dairy. Govern- ment policy encouraged the pro- duction of beef cattle and the Scot- tish returns indicated this program is taking effect. Agriculture ministry officials {1 said it was hoped farmers would be encouraged to keep calves to maturity by a subsidy now effec- tive. Farmers will be e to submit calves for subsidy a months old, drawing £4 (816)>a head for steer calves and £3 for |} heifers. United Kingdom hog population declined slightly but officials said they noted with satisfaction an inerease in the number of breeding ine! 1 SOWS, THERE OUGHT TO BEA A LAW ~ By Al Fagaly and Harry Shorten { HEN!
