Montreal, March 28--(CP)--Que. bec will send into Memorial Cup play a team that is unique in the annals of this province's junior clubs, an all French-Canadian squad who pack plenty of weight as well as showing speed on the blades. Lack of poundage has always been the downfall of most Quebec junior teams, who could usually skate with the Ontario champions but seldom had enough men big enough to throw their weight around to ad- vantage. This year Montzeal Nationales, a name famous 30 years ago for great lacrosse and hockey teams, came back into the limelight when the junior club won the Quebec Junior Amateur Association League title. . They won the championship last week by defeating Montreal Royals, a predominantly English-speaking team, in a hectic series that drew more than 40,000 fans in the five games. The series attracted tremendous interest among the city's fans, who . were hard put for hockey after Canadiens missed the Stanley Cup playoffs and Royals bowed out of the Quebec Senior Hockey League playoffs. Reporting on the junior series Elmer (Montreal Herald) Ferguson had this to say: "The seriés lifted junior hockey to the highest plane it ever has reached here, and the fashion in which these clubs fought it out . gamely. right down to the wire, took some of the sting from the absence ,..of Canadiens and Royals from their accustomed playoff spots. "Over the years this Frank Selke- sponsored development of junior hockey is going to prove a great background for the senior game here, and put Canadiens on a more equitable footing with Toronto Maple Leafs in the matter of a sup. ply reservoir for the future." Nationales also drew raves from Baz (Montreal Star) O'Meara "They fitted in like a glove in the Selke hockey youth program, which, | by the way, must be paying off too, | because nearly all these playoff games drew between 8,000 and | 10,000 people." And just to show the Habitants aren't fooling in their bid to climb back onto the National League's top perch again, General Manager Selke is currently touring the Western Provinces lining up new farm affiliates for the Flying Frenchmen, Hockey | Lady Puck Fans Sponsors Entire By GORD PEPER Canadian Press Staff Writer Winnipeg, March 29--(CP)--Mrs. Hilda Donati's bread and butter may lie in the sale of fruit in her little fruit and coffee stand in Port Arthur, Ont. but that isn't' where her main interest lies. "Hoc- key comes first," she says, "and my business runs a poor second." A native of Virden, Man., Mrs. Donati's name--"Hilda" --has ap- peared on the front of sweathers worn by teen-aged hockey players in the lakehead for the past five years, Then she first took a bunch of youngsters, who were being left at the rinkside to watch hockey, up to an, unusued rink in Port Arthur's west end. There she established Port Arthur's first pee wee hockey team and a year later she opened the lakehead's first pee wee hockey league, : Has Other Teams But her interest in young puck- chasers doesn't rest all in one basket. She operates teams in bantam, midget and juvenile loops and next winter plans. along with her pee wee league, to operate a complete bantam league. The attractive hockey booster, who could win "the most rabid hockey fan contest" in a walk, plans to enter a junior in the Thunder Bay league season, In all, she estimates that some appointed coaches who handle the many teams for her. Why does a woman with two] children and a fruit business do this? She answers simply "I love | hockey. And when you have lots of | teams, made up of boys of all ages, you can watch their hockey lives grow and when you see them as juniors, you get a real thrill com- paring them to the little fellows who couldn't skate a few years back." May Do It Again It can safely be said that Hilda Donati was and will be, the oly woman to ever | heave a corset on the ice at Tor- onto's Maple Leaf Gardens. "But," she says with a gleam in her eye, "if you see Port Arthur West End Bruins in the Memorial | Cup final this year, you might see | another corset out there." Mus. Only once before in 21 games have they managed a victory, and that was in Paris in 1928. The game, stopped five times by unruly spectators, was played in an icy wind at Swansea. Once a num. ber of the 38,000 fans pored through a gap into the barriers onto the pitch. Bottles and oranges began to fly. Spectators were ejected by players; players were tackled by spectators; fists flew; a spectator got mixed up in a line-out; loudspeakers called for "fair play for the players," and thousands streamed across the pitch at half_time to seek better positions. However, everything ended ami. cably.
