MONDAY, MARCH 29, 1948 Canadian Garden | Service -- 1948 By GORDON LINDSAY SMITH Try Something New - It's a good plan, say those with experience, to try something en.| tirely new each year. By adding a | rlower or vegetable each season one will make new and pleasing dis- | coveries, widen the range of inter. est and also value. It should be remembered that the job of the plant breeder has been continuous. Each year he dis- covers new types and varieties, turning out better or hardier plants that will do well in a wider range of climate in Canada, In addition to.brand new flow- ers and vegetables, new shades have been added to old standbys among the flowers, and = earlier, more tender varieties to standard vegetables. Some of the old favor. ites of our father's and grandfath. ers' days would hardly be recogniz. od today. Flowers have been great. ly improved in size and color and vegetables are better too. It is a good plan to go over the new seed catalogues carefully and note some of these improvements. Even for the colder parts of Can. ada it is now possible to get varie- ties of early corn, tomatoes, melons and such semi-tender things that will do well, The plant breeders have made this possible by select. ing very early maturing types and breeding from these. Certainly this point should be considered in mak. ing up the list of purchases, And it is also well to add something that, so far ag the reader is con- cerned, is entirely new, but that is recommended for his locality. This may be broad beans, or a watermelon, or broccoli, table tur- nips, white radish, borecole, Brus- sels sprouts, swiss chard, Chinese cabbage, hybrid corn, endive or some of the herbs. None of these things are entirely' new, though certain varieties of them are, but too few of any of them are to be found in the average garden. The beginner is advised to give a few of them a trial each year. He may well find that the family really likes them and he has made a dis. covery that will add interest and variety to his vegetable plot. Garden Tools If necessary all the tools needed in a small garden will be a rake, a hoe and a spade o rdigging fork. These are minimum requirements. With a little more equipment much | labor can be saved. Digging forks, | cultivators, special weeders, dutch hoes, etc., will make the work easier | and more interesting. They are re- signed for special jobs. | For larger gardens a small gar. | den tractor that will cultivate, plow, cut the grass and do other jobs might well be considered. These are now coming on the market | freely, They are not expensive. | and are very cheaply operated. A quart of gas will operate them for | several hours. A wide selection is| also available. It should also be | remembered that a sharp tool will THE DAILY TIMES-GAZETTE PAGE THIRTEEN Heads Safety League At the 34th annual meeting of the Ontario Safety League, Mr. R. A. Owen Sound Asks Materials Priority For New Building Owen Sound, March 29--(CP) -- Seeking a solution of the housing problem created by Thursday's an- nouncement that the dominion government is abandoning efforts to relieve Ontario's. need for rental housing, Mayor E. C. Sargent and Ald. Randall Browne, chairman of the city council's housing commit- tee, have sent a telegram to Recon- struction Minister Howe. It requests him to make available building materials to local con- tractors on the same system of pri- orities which formerly applied to wartime housing. The dominion government an- nounced Thursday that Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation would undertake no more war-time houses in Ontario, because of Ont- ario legislation. Owen Sound city council at its meeting last Monday decided to seek the erection of 25 more war- time houses here this year. The city already has 100 homes of this type.
