The plan applies particularly to new home building, including small b s, larger h dupl and apartments, It is known as "RED SEAL", The industry, co-operating with the Electric Service League of Ontario, has set a minimum standard, or yardstick, by which all householders can judge how many and what kind of electrical outlets, plugs, switches and wire circuits are required for any room or part of a home, and what size of main feeder wires and switch should be provided for for homes of various sizes. This Red Seal standard is a minimum for the proper function ing, now and in the future, of the usual number and kind of lamps and appliances in an average home. It provides for the use of an electric range, water heater, electric grate and other common appliances, and for some new appliances now in experimental de- velopment. In addition it tains r dati that certain outlets additional to the Red Seal minimum should be included in the wiring to provide greater flexibility in the ®arrangement of furniture and added convenience in the use of electrical appliances for many future years. The plan has been tested and proven for a quarter of a century. The owners of over 35,000 homes in the Toronto area have enjoyed for many years the added comfort and convenience facilitated by Red Seal wiring. The National Adequate Wiring Bureau of the United States adopted the Red Seal plan as the basis of its adequate wiring program, and Electric Leagues in Manitoba and British Columbia use the Red Seal standard in their work, gE The common sense economy of installing adequate wiring .which makes some provision for future needs of electricity when a home is first wired, and freedom from' the inconvenience of rewiring, appeal very strongly to every home owner who has had to rewire an old house, Installation of wiring to the Red Seal standard when a home is being built will assurg every new home builder of greater freedom from this expense and bother. The Electric Service League of Ontario advises that in the last year Red Seal homes have been certified by over 70 different Hydro commissions in the municipalities of the province, The tion of electricity which was necessitated recently by the continuing large increase in demand for electric power will soon be relieved by the con- struction of increased generating capacity. When that time comes, the owners of the many homes built this year will want to be sure of having sufficient wiring in their homes for the new appliances which reduce the labour of housekeeping and improve the seeing tasks and decoration of our homes. The wiring installed in homes built this year will be serving the owner during the lifetime of the home, perhaps fifty years from now. The local Hydro. has copies of Red Seal wiring specifications and other literature available for the use of home owners and builders. Mr. J. R. Risebrough has been appointed by the Commission to discuss the wiring of new homes with owners and builders in this area. He has been authorized by the Electric Service League of Ontario to post a large Red Seal on the front of new homes in which Red Seal wiring is being installed, and to put a permanent Red Seal transfer certificate on the switch box of homes which, after inspection, meet all the requirements of the Red Seal standard of adequate wiring.
